Team USA overtakes China in medal count

It was a good day for Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics. The Americans captured six gold, one silver and a bronze and takes over the lead in the medal count 37 to 34 over China. The U.S. and China are tied with 18 gold medals, but the Americans have a slight edge with nine silver and 10 bronze, while China owns 11 silver and five bronze at the conclusion of Day 6. In swimming, gold medals went to Michael Phelps (200m individual medley) Rebecca Soni (200m breaststroke) and Tyler Clary (200m backstroke). Clary's time was an Olympic record with a 1:53.41 clocking, while Soni's time was a world record as she came in with a time of 2:19.59. Phelps picked up his 16th career gold medal and his 20th overall. Gabrielle Douglas picked up her gold medal in gymnastics for her performance in the all-around, and Kayla Harrison won the first Olympic gold medal for the U.S. women in judo. Team USA won gold in the women's eight rowing event.
