Ted Davis leads Team White to a 7-6 win at Udall Park today

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Ted Davis has spent many months in rehab for one thing or another, but now he's back on the field and today he led Team White to a 7-6 win over Team Blue, belting a single, a double and an opposite-field triple, while knocking in two runs.

Davis, 65. is from Athens, Alabama, and is a die-hard Crimson Tide fan. Every college football season (you guessed it) his teammates in the dugout get an earful when Alabama reaches No. 1.

His teammates usually come up with a good-natured response just to bring him back to earth.

Go Tide!

Wildcats finish 4-3 on road trip

Arizona Wildcats Baseball

The University of Arizona baseball team returns home today after a seven-game road trip, which left the Wildcats with a 4-3 record to open the 2016 season. Arizona won 2 of 3 from the Rice Owls (8-1, 6-2, 3-4), lost a single outing to Lamar (13-5) and finished the trip in San Diego with a loss to Tulane (11-10), while picking up wins over Nebraska (11-10) and San Diego State (7-3).

Cody Ramer was the top hitter for the Wildcats on the trip. Ramer played in all seven games, went 12 for 31, knocked in six runs, scored eight runs and batted .387. He also banged out three doubles and had one triple.

Arizona takes a quick trip to Scottsdale on Tuesday for an exhibition game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Golden State Warriors keep on ticking

The Golden State Warriors keep on ticking.

The Warriors are still on a fast train heading for the best-ever regular season record in the NBA.

As of today, a remarkable 53-5 record -- just 20 wins away from breaking the all-time record, held by the Chicago Bulls (72-10).

The Warriors are a perfect 24-0 at home and an unbelievable 29-5 on the road, behind their main man, Stephen Curry, who is averaging 30 points per game.

TOTS' Leap Year Game slated for Monday

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

The Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) will be playing baseball on Feb. 29. It's their Leap Year Game. Leap Year occurs every four years, every four years the TOTS get to play an extra game. Not that the TOTS need any special reason to play ball, after all they play three days a week -- all 52 weeks of the year.

One thing is for sure, there will be no "leaping" on the ball field at Udall Park.

It'll be the usual -- stretching a triple into a double, a double into a single (well, you get the idea).

Game time at 9:30 a.m.

Note: People born on Feb. 29 are called "leaplings" and the TOTS' roster is void of any members born on that day. The closest: Jeff Rein, 64. He was born Feb. 28, 1952. Happy Birthday, Jeff!

TOTS' lefty once pitched for Princeton in 1929

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Mike Aicher died Sept. 1, 1998, in his hometown of Tucson, Arizona. He had a varied career, working during the depression years on Wall Street, then joining the staff of Harry Hopkins in Washington, from which he became a regional director for the National Labor Relations Board. In 1944 he left the NLRB and became a labor negotiator, first for then Selby Shoe Company and nine years later for the U.S. Brewers Foundation, retiring around 1970.

At various times he was chairman of the Community Fund, the Red Cross, and other campaigns, and he was active in promoting programs for boys. He also, at the time of our 50th reunion was playing baseball three times a week. His greatest interest in his old age, however, was in religion, and he read the Bible with various rabbis, priests, and ministers.

The above article was written in 1982 and was recently published in the Princeton Alumni Weekly. The article mentions Aicher was still playing baseball three times a week. In fact, Aicher was a member of the Tucson Old Timers.

Aicher said in an article written by Dave Lumia of the Arizona Daily Star in 1979, that he pitched for Princeton in 1929-32. Aicher told Lumia that his most memorable game at Princeton took place in 1929 when he pitched against Johnny Murphy of Fordham, who went on to become the ace of the New York Yankees' bullpen in the 1930s and a member of the New York Mets' front office in the 1960s.

"I pitched against Johnny Murphy. He beat me 2-0." Aicher told the reporter. "I hadn't seen him for years after that game until one day I went to see a Mets' game. I went up to the press box to see him. He didn't remember me, of course, but after I told him who I was, he sat me down and bought me a steak dinner."

Submitted by TOTS' historian Dan Price

Note: Believe me! I didn't make this up. Aicher was on the TOTS' roster for 18 years . The above photo was taken by Arizona Daily Star photographer Joe Vitti in July of 1979 at a TOTS' game at Himmel Park. Mr. Aicher went shirtless at the time. The current TOTS must wear shirts. It's in the bylaws. It's a good thing, because I doubt any of us current TOTS would look as good as Mr. Aicher did with his shirt off.

Some bonus trivia: While at Princeton, Aicher became friends with an aspiring young actor by the name of James Stewart, who, at the time, was a cheerleader at the Princeton games. As I said, you can't make this stuff up!

Hats off to the TOTS, especially all those old timers who played before us.

Utah beats Arizona, 70-64

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

A wild one in Salt Lake City!

Arizona, down by 11 points at halftime, stormed back in the second half, but couldn't get anything to fall in the final two and half minutes and Utah beat the Wildcats today in Salt Lake City, 70-64.

The Utes, on the other hand, scored the final seven points of the game and the ninth-ranked Wildcats fall to 22-7 and 10-6 in the Pac-12 Conference.

Utah led at the half, 40-29. Arizona outscored the Utes 35-30 in the final 20 minutes.

Allonzo Trier led the Wildcats with 23 points, but in the end he hit 8 of 17 from the field, most of those misses coming late in the second half. It's that same old story, the ON THE ROAD CURSE as Trier's final shot attempts rimmed out.

The Wildcats will be glad to return home after being swept by Colorado and Utah.

With the Pac-12 title all but lost, the new season begins -- its called the NCAA Tournament.

Back in 1985, the TOTS were honored with the great Bob Feller as guest speaker. Other notable speakers included Mike Feber (1994), Jerry Kindall (1995), Mike Candrea (1998), Dick Tomey (1999) and former Arizona Daily Star sports reporter Abe Chanin (2000), along with the TOTS' own Brad Tolson in 2015.

The TOTS' committee is hard at work finalizing the details for this year's luncheon.

Peters leads Team Blue to 7-5 win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Pistol Pete Peters continued his hot hitting in the month of February as Team Blue edges Team White, 7-5, today in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game at Udall Park.

Peters went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs as Team Blue, down 2-0 after one inning of play and 3-2 after three innings, scored four runs in the fifth inning and held on for the win.

Down 7-3 in the seventh, Team White scored two runs and had the tying run on base with two outs, but couldn't get the job done. Right-hander Lloyd Barzell (photo) picked up the win and Arnie White was saddled with the loss.

Pigpen Price led the way for Team White with three hits in four trips to plate, while knocking in two runs.

The big blow of the day -- a stand-up triple by Bob Daliege.

The TOTS will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 29, an extra game day this year for the organization.

Wildcats lose in Boulder

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The ninth-ranked Arizona Wildcats lost 75-72 to the Colorado Buffaloes tonight in Boulder. Allonzo Trier had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but the ball bounced off the rim and (you guessed it!) the Colorado fans stormed the court.

Down by 11 with 12:05 remaining in the game, Arizona fought back and finally pulled to within three points when Kaleb Tarczewski rammed home a dunk with 51 seconds left. Unfortunately for the Wildcats the scoring ended there for both teams.

Ryan Anderson finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Trier netted 15.

Both teams collected 38 rebounds, but the Buffaloes seemed to be in the right place at the right time and grabbed enough second-chance points to get the job done.

Arizona falls to 22-6 overall and 10-5 in the Pac-12 Conference.

Note: The officiating was HORRIBLE! But that's the way it goes on the road in the Pac-12.

Trouble in Beaumont

Arizona Wildcats Baseball

Arizona (2-2) ran into a buzz saw last night in Beaumont, Texas, losing 13-5 to Lamar.

The Wildcats sent six pitchers to the mound -- five of them gave up runs as Lamar (4-0) had 12 hits -- including two grand slams. All the scoring was completed before the seventh inning. Arizona's final relief pitcher Cody Deason did the best of the six pitchers, allowing one hit and no runs in two innings of work.

Cody Ramer is the hitting star for the Wildcat after four games. Ramer is 8 for 16 with two doubles and five RBI.

Arizona continues the series with Rice on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Pete Peters went 4 for 4, scored twice and drove in a run to lead Team White to a 9-2 win today over Team Blue in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game at Udall Park.

No contest: Arizona rolls to 38-point win over ASU

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The 12th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (22-5, 10-4) dismantled Arizona State at McKale Center tonight.

The final score: 99-61. The Wildcats played the final five minutes with all of the starters on the bench.

Arizona center Kaleb Tarczewski hauled in a career-high 15 rebounds and Allonzo Trier pumped in 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the high-flying Wildcats. Dusan Ristic added 16 points, while Ryan Anderson contributed 15 points and eight rebounds. Gabe York and Kadeem Allen also finished in double figures with 12 points apiece.

Parker Jackson-Cartwright did his job as well with eight points, seven assists and no turnovers in his fourth straight game as a starter.

In the paint, it was all Arizona. The Wildcats out rebounded the Sun Devils, 50-26.

Way to go, Wildcats. Now go get those two road games!

TOTS game ends on line-shot to third

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Team White held on for an 8-5 win over Team Blue in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game today at Udall Park.

Team Blue tried their best to rally in the final inning. With the bases loaded and trailing 8-5, Team Blue sent up one of their truly pull hitters -- the hard-hitting Slamin' Bob Stofft. He's been known to pull the ball down the third baseline over and over and over again. You can count on a hot shot just about every time and if you're the third baseman, you'd better be ready.

Today, Stofft did it again. This time it was a line shot to the left of third baseman Tommy Potter, but this time the ball sailed into Potter's mitt for the final out.

Lefty Dennis Crowley picked up the win and Pigpen Price was saddled with the loss.

Way to hit the ball, Bob! And, nice catch Tommy!

The Tucson Old Timers will be back in action on Friday with a 9:30 a.m start.

Arizona improves to No. 12 in AP Poll

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats (21-5) moved up to No. 12 in the latest Associated Press Poll, released today.

Oregon (20-6) lost two games last week and dropped to No. 16. The Ducks are tied with the Wildcats for first place in the Pac-12 Conference, both with identical 9-4 records, with five regular-season conference games remaining.

Villanova (22-3) hangs on to the top spot in the poll.

Lundwall, Barzell, Price lead Team White to 13-9 win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

President's Day Game

Dan Lundwall and Pigpen Price haven't exactly hit the cover off the ball this winter. Finding the "sweet spot" on those old aluminium bats can be a big problem at times. Both players finished the month of January with just six hits apiece.

Today, they both broke out of their "mini slumps" as Lundwall and Price went 3 for 4 to lead Team White to a 13-9 win over Team Blue in a 60-and-over game at Udall Park. Lloyd Barzell, who led the club in hits in 2015, doesn't concern himself with hitting slumps and today it was just another day at the  plate for him as he went 2 for 4 and drove in four runs for Team White.  All in all, a good day for Team White as pitcher Bob Daliege goes seven innings and picks up the win.

Team Blue kept pace with Team White for most of the game, thanks mainly to "Double D" Dick Ducklow, who went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs. Lefty Ron Petersen was saddled with the loss.

"I had a good day," said Lundwall, following the game. "It's nice to connect. It makes a lot of difference when you find the sweet spot."

As for Price, he feels like he has a lot of work to do. "I had three hits today, but two of them were infield hits. I had my worst month in eight years with the TOTS last month. I think I finished the month with a .188 average. Just awful!"

The good news: Price and Lundwall have the rest of the year to right the ship. As for Barzell, he's off to another good start this season with 17 hits in January, on pace for the another 200-plus hit season.

Photos: (top) Lundwall, 3 for 4 today, (middle) Price, 3 for 4 today and (bottom) Barzell, 2 for 4 today and 4 RBI.

Wildcats hold on to beat USC at McKale

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The 17th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (21-5, 9-4) relinquished a 16-point lead at halftime and held on to beat USC 86-78 tonight at McKale Center.

The Wildcats hit on all cylinders in the first half and had plenty of support from the bench. The starters tallied 23 points and the bench added 20 as Arizona rolled to a 46-30 lead at the half. Reserve forward Mark Tollefsen led the Wildcats with 11 points and Dusan Ristic added seven.  Gabe York scored nine points -- included two long-range three-pointers.

Arizona enjoyed leads up to 19 points in the first half.

In the second half, it was a different story. USC came roaring back and closed the gap to just two points at 70-68 with 6:12 remaining. Allonzo Trier finally stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer at the 4:49 mark to put the Wildcats up, 77-69.

In the end, the Wildcats had enough left in the tank to take down a very good USC team. Arizona withstood a barrage of three-pointers by the Trojans -- 11 in all, nine in the second half.

As for the Wildcats, York finished with 17 points and Trier added 14, while Ryan Anderson chipped in 14 and Tollefsen finished with 13. Ristic finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Parker Jackson-Cartwright scored seven points and dished out five assists, while Kaleb Tarczewski finished with seven points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with nine. Kadeem Allen closed out the scoring for the Wildcats with five points to go along with three assists and three rebounds.

Arizona is now tied with Oregon for first place in the Pac-12.

Way to go, Wildcats!

Wildcats will their way to 81-75 win over UCLA

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats will their way to an 81-75 win over UCLA at McKale tonight. Allonzo Trier scores 15 points in the second half and finishes with 18 points to lead the Wildcats.

Parker Jackson-Cartwright throws down a career-high 16 points, while Gabe York adds 15 and Ryan Anderson scores 11 points and grabs 13 rebounds. Kaleb Tarczewski finishes with nine points and a team-high 14 rebounds.

My heart can't take much more of this. Arizona shoots 29 percent in the first half and comes roaring back, outscoring the Bruins, 47-31, in the second half.

Arizona improves to 20-5 and 8-4 in the Pac-12 Conference.

Way to go, Wildcats!

Ducklow knocks in 5 runs for TOTS White

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

It was a real slug fest at Udall Park today as Team White held on for a 15-13 win over Team Blue in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

Dick Ducklow, 74, was the big hitter for Team White with a 4 for 4 day and five RBI, while teammate Ron Peterson went 3 for 4 and two runs batted in. For Team Blue, it was Danny Boxberger and Jesse Ochoa leading the way. Both players went 4 for 5 and knocked in four runs apiece.

Ducklow, a pull hitter from Spring Valley, Wisconsin, went the other way today with most of his hits being drilled to straight-a-way center field.

The TOTS will take a break over the weekend and will be back at it next week with games on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Thunder Tim hits a moon shot

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Thunder Tim Tolson hit a moon shot today at Udall Park.

Well, to be honest, the moon wasn't shining, instead, it was a bright, sunny morning when Thunder Tim Tolson stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with Team White trailing Team Blue, 5-4, in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

With a runner on base and the wind blowing out to right field, Tolson, a lefty, sent a high fly ball to deep right field.  Right fielder Billy Heiny looked up, raised his right hand, signaling "this ball is out of here" as the ball bounced 10 feet beyond the fence and came to rest at the base of one of the tall, oak trees.

Presto! Team White grabs a 6-5 win.

You might call the home run wind-aided. Usually, Thunder Tim, who hit 13 round-trippers for the TOTS in 2015, doesn't need any additional help when he's at the plate. But, today, the wind took what looked like a foul ball and pushed it fair by more than five feet inside the right field foul pole.

It was a day for lefties. Left-handed pitcher Ron Petersen started the game for Team Blue and was relieved in the third inning by another lefty, Dennis Crowley. Unfortunately for Crowley, it was his "steamy" fastball which Tolson put into orbit.

The TOTS will be back at it on Wednesday.

Arizona reaches No. 17 in AP Poll

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats (19-5) moved up to No. 17 in the Associated Press college basketball poll, after their sweep of the Washington schools last week. The poll, which was released today, has Villanova (20-3)  as the new headliner. As far as the Pac-12 goes, Oregon (20-4) is ranked No. 11 and USC (18-5) has slid into the No.23 spot.

Broncos win Super Bowl 50

The Denver Broncos won Super Bowl 50 tonight with a 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in Santa Clara, California. Peyton Manning, at 39 years of age, gets his second ring and his 200th career win.

If Manning decides to retire, he'll definitely go out a winner. The Denver quarterback did not throw a touchdown pass tonight, instead he left it up to Von Miller and the Broncos' defense to get it done. Miller had six tackles and 2.5 sacks and was named the Super Bowl MVP.

Carolina's Cam Newton did not throw a touchdown pass as well. Newton connected on 18 of 41 passes for 265 yards and one interception. Manning threw for 141 yards, connecting on 13 of 23 passes and was intercepted once.

C.J. Anderson, who rushed for 90 yards on 23 carries, scored the Broncos only offensive touchdown on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter, while Jonathan Stewart scored the only touchdown for Carolina on a 1-yard plunge in the second quarter.

Congrats to the Broncos!

Cheering for the "old guy" today!

Super Bowl 50

It's just a few hours away. Super Bowl 50 is finally here.

I'm going to cheer on the old guy, 39-year-old Peyton Manning, today.

Old guy! I'm 31 years older and have two sons who are older than Mr. Manning.

Granted pro football is for the younger set. I doubt we have seen the last of Peyton. Chances are he'll be a a head coach in the NFL in the near future. Heck, he may even have his bro, Eli, at his side someday.

Life goes on.

Peyton Manning doesn't have to work another day in his life. His net worth is somewhere around $165 million. Currently his endorsements alone are hovering around $25 million. His Payback Charity helps disadvantaged youth. Manning is one man who will do some good as he heads for his golden years.

But today, he has one thing on his mind: Win Super Bowl 50.

My prediction: Denver 24  Carolina  21

Anderson leads Wildcats to win over Washington

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Ryan Anderson scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Arizona Wildcats won a wild one in Seattle, Washington today with a 77-72 Pac-12 victory over the Huskies.

The Wildcats ended the first half on an 8-0 run and walked off the court with a 44-38 lead. Gabe York canned two back-back three-pointers down the stretch and Allonzo Trier saw action in the first half and scored five points -- including a three-pointer, but it was Anderson who did most of the damage against the Huskies in the first 20 minutes with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Arizona gave it all back to start the second half as the Huskies went on an 11-2 run and regained the lead 49-46 with 16:01 left in the game.

The Wildcats fought back and went on a 10-0 run, but couldn't hold off the Huskies and with 7:36 left in the game Trier went to the line with Arizona leading by one, 60-59. Trier calmly sank both free throws and the Wildcats enjoyed a three-point lead. Anderson went to the line at the 6:22 mark, canned two more free throws and the Wildcats were up five.

Arizona lost Trier at the six minute mark with five fouls and the Huskies battled back to tie the game at 66-66 with 3:54 remaining. Anderson made two free throws with 1:40 left to put the Wildcats back in the lead at 72-70 and Allen hit a three with one minute remaining to up the lead to five.

Anderson took over from there. He battled underneath for an offensive rebound with 16 seconds remaining and was fouled. Anderson sank both free throws to put the Wildcats up for good, 77-72.

Gabe York scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Dusan Ristic added 11 points. Trier finished with seven points and two steals.

Arizona improves to 19-5 and 7-4 in the conference.

Way to go, Wildcats!

Daliege top hitter for TOTS in January

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Bob Daliege, 67, made the most of his at bats in January as he led all hitters on the 60-and-over TOTS baseball club with 20 hits in 27 official plate appearances for a .741 batting average.

Daliege led the team in doubles with five and also knocked in the most runs for the month with 12.

Other top hitters for the month include Lloyd Barzell (17for 34, a 500 average), Pete Peters (16 for 28, a .571 average), Tim Tolson (16 for 28, a .571 average), Arnie White (16 for 26, a .615 average),  Dennis Crowley (15 for 30, a .500 average), Jesse Ochoa (14 for 25, a 560 average) and Dan Boxberger (13 for 24), a .542 average).

Davis has big day with TOTS

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Ted Davis did it all for the Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) at Udall Park today.

Davis, 65, shut down a Team White rally in the fifth inning when he ran down a hard-hit ball of the bat of Danny Boxberger. The over-the-shoulder catch kept Team White from expanding on its 3-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh and Team White clinging to the 3-2 lead, Davis drilled a shot down the third baseline for a two-run double, which capped a four-run inning and gave Team Blue a 6-3 win.

Team White, which held the lead for most of the game, went quietly in the bottom of the seventh. It was the first game of February for the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers. The sun is supposed to shine everyday next week and the TOTS should get games in on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Nice to have the good weather back in the Old Pueblo.

Arizona picks up road win at Washington State

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Nothing is ever easy for the Arizona Wildcats on the road.

The Wildcats built a 19-point lead midway through the second half in Pullman tonight and then lost guard Kadeem Allen, who fouled out after scoring just two points in a little over seven minutes of playing time.

The result: Washington State goes on a scoring spurt and closes to within eight points, before the Wildcats right the ship and go on to a 79-64 road win over the Cougars.

Once again, the Wildcats turned to the inside play of Ryan Anderson, who finished the night with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Anderson seems to be at the right place at the right time. Get the ball in his hands and good things happen.

Anderson established a new career-high with his 31 points on 10 for 16 shooting from the field and 11 of 17 from the foul line.

Arizona improves to 18-5 overall and 6-4 in the Pac-12 Conference.

Way to go Ryan... and way to go Wildcats!

Remembering David "Big Daddy D" Lattin

Chances are the Arizona Wildcats will return to the NCAA Basketball Tournament again this year, and if they can reel off a few wins, there's a chance they may meet up with the Oklahoma Sooners, currently ranked No. 1.

There's a player on the Sooners named Khadeem Lattin, a 6-9 sophomore and the grandson of (now, brace yourself) David "Big Daddy D" Lattin.

Yes the same Big Daddy Lattin, who played for Texas Western in 1966 when the Miners beat Kentucky for the National Collegiate Basketball Championship.

Most of us sports fans have seen the movie Glory Road, the 2006 film about the head coach of Texas Western College, Don Haskins,  who coached an all-back starting five, a first in NCAA history, and led them to the NCAA title and a victory over the legendary Adolph Rupp and the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats.

Note: Arizona lost in El Paso on Feb. 10, 1966 by a score of 81-72 in overtime to the Miners. Lattin recorded a double-double that night with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Ted Pickett scored 19 points to lead the Arizona Wildcats, while Bob Spahn and Bob Hansen each scored 17 points. Bruce Larson was the head coach of the Wildcats.

Arizona ranked 23rd in AP Poll

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats (17-5) are ranked No. 23 in this week's AP Poll, while Oregon (18-4) takes a big leap forward to No. 16.

Oklahoma (18-2) hangs on to No. 1.

Baseball, softball just around the corner for the Wildcats

It is February!

It's a busy month for Tucson residents. The Gem Show is off and running. The Rodeo is just a few weeks away. Spring Training gets underway in Phoenix (sorry to say, not Tucson) as pitchers and catchers report. Of course, it is also time for college baseball and softball.

The University of Arizona baseball team begins its 2016 season at Rice with a three-game series, Feb. 19-21. The Wildcats' softball team will open their season, hosting the Hillenbrand Classic, Feb. 11-14.

Come on now, Mr. Weatherman. Give us some sunny, warm days!

The sliding glass door

I'll venture away from a sports story today.

The following is entitled: The Sliding Glass Door

I'm at the age when I'm losing a lot of my friends. All of us will go through it. Each time it happens, I sit back for a moment and recall those moments in time, those flashbacks, if you will, like when I walked down the hallway in high school with that special friend, or later in life, sat in the dugout and had a brief conversation with a teammate, or, more times than not, shuffled through the morning paper and discovered I lost another friend.

Like most people, I thank my lucky stars that I'm still here, still around to savor those "special moments" with my friends...and my loved ones,  who are still with us.

Four or five days a week, I push a button and wait patiently for a caregiver to open up a sliding glass door, allowing me to enter the memory care unit of which my mother is a resident. I take a deep breath and enter a world where all the residents have a hard time remembering those special moments in their life.

I thank my lucky stars my mother is still with us and still utters my name as I sit down beside her.  We still have our conversations -- although they are brief at times. I walked the hallway the other day, while my mother was being attended to by a "caring" caregiver. There are close to 40 residents at the center and each one of them has a square wooded cabinet, hanging on the wall just outside their door. Inside the cabinet, are pictures and keepsakes, noting the resident's "special moments" in their life. Some are photos from the 1950s. 1940s, 1930s and even the 1920s.

Every time I prepare to leave the facility, I wait for a caregiver to hustle over and unlock the sliding glass door. I walk into the sunlight and look up at the blue sky. I take a deep breath and thank my lucky stars that I can go on and create some more special moments in my life.

I will be back tomorrow and I will  patiently wait for the sliding glass door to open. You can count on it.
