"He rounded third and he's heading home"

TOTS Senior Baseball Network

The Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) lost a shortstop today a 1 p.m.

Ed Rife, 77, passed away.

Nancy Rife, Ed's wife and best friend, sent a message to all the TOTS this afternoon. Her closing sentence said it all, "Ed rounded third and he's heading home."

Playing baseball with the 60-and-over TOTS, the oldest organized baseball team in the country, is an honor and a privilege for the author of this blog. Year in, year out, I take the field with my teammates as we spend a good part of our golden years together on the diamond at Udall Park.

We have our own park. The sign above the backstop says so -- Home of the 60-and-over TOTS.

Sometimes, the final score is meaningless, even though we battle for the win, every time out.

I marvel at the play sometimes, the backhanded stabs, the running catches and the final lunge at first base to beat out a slow roller. But what I marvel at the most is the men who play alongside me -- every single one of them is a Hall of Famer in my book.

Ed Rife was -- and will always be a TOTS Hall of Famer, but he was the only TOT, the only member of the organization, who was inducted into the Greater Akron, Ohio Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.

Ed played ball since he was knee high to a grasshopper. He developed a fluid motion at his shortstop position which was a pleasure to watch. He never hurried a throw, always played within himself and made the play time after time -- even at the age of  76.

And talk about a sweet swing. A lefty, Ed was just as calm at the plate as he was on the infield. And, was he ever patient at the plate! He told me once, "I never swing at the first pitch."

The Akron Hall of Famer, played in the Men's Senior Baseball League World Series, just a year ago. He pitched the final two innings and saved the game that put our team into the playoffs. I should know. I was there, right behind him at third base. I never wanted to win a ball game more than I did that day. It was Ed's final tournament, final senior World Series...his last hurrah.

Nancy told me a few months ago that they shared their life together for more than fifty-seven years. She witnessed every ball game he played in, every scoop he made in the infield and every perfect throw he made to first base -- from high school, to college, to semi-pro ball...wherever...and whenever Ed played, she was there.

Ed's memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. at  the Adair Funeral Home, 1050 N. Dodge. The TOTS will be there to say 'good-bye" to "Mr. Smooth".

Remembering Ed, from the blog
of Conrad Royksund

Ed Rife: Better Than We Were

It is the experience of most of us
that some people are just better at doing things
than we are. Ed Rife was like that.
He played baseball as if it were a skill
as ordinary as walking, and sometimes
he wondered why most of us
had so much trouble walking.

It did not happen often, but sometimes
he wondered out loud, and when he did,
most of us concentrated on the basics:
things like learning how to walk,
or paying attention to how many
outs there were, and when not to bunt.
And to ourselves, we wondered why
Ed made it look so easy.

He didn't attack a pitched ball.
He met it with grace and a swing
that was not something added on:
it was part of the arch of the line drive,
part of how he turned to first;
part of how he knew what would happen,
and whether it was possible to take two.

Maybe Ed was born that way.
Maybe he got to Carnegie Hall by practicing.
Whatever it was, it was something lovely
when Ed picked up a ground ball
and turned to first in one easy motion,
and when he did, we said, "Damn
he makes that look easy."
And we promised ourselves that
we would pay more attention,
and try to become better than we were.

Some people do things better than we,
and maybe we do somethings well, too,
but rarely with the easy grace of Ed,
looking down part first, as if he already knew
what he could do; while we
tried to become better than we were.

Reimold homers...yes Reimold

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks knock off Colorado 6-2 today at Chase Field and take two of three from the Rockies.

The only recognizable man in the lineup for the D'backs today, Aaron Hill, singles, doubles and triples, scores twice and knocks in two runs as Arizona improves to 57-79. Ooch! By the way Nolan Reimhold hits a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Yes, a new member of the Diamondbacks -- NOLAN REIMOLD.

Chase Anderson (8-6) gets the win today. He hurls six strong innings.

It's on to San Diego and a four-game series with the Padres, beginning on Monday night.

Arizona 58 UNLV 13

Arizona Wildcats Football

The Arizona Wildcats amassed 787 yards of offense tonight  in front of their home crowd and cruised to an easy 58-13 win over the UNLV Rebels to open the 2014 season in impressive fashion.

Led by freshman quarterback Anu Solomon, who completed 25 of 44 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns, Arizona had its way with the Rebels from the get go, jumping out to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, a 24-6 advantage at the half and then turned on the after-burners, outscoring UNLV 34-7 in the second half.

When Solomon wasn't throwing the ball down the field, he was handing off to Teris Jones-Grigsby and Nick Wilson. Jones-Grigsby carried the ball 13 times for a 124 yards and one touchdown, while Wilson made the most of his seven carries with 104 yards rushing and a touchdown. Solomon ran for 50 yards as the Wildcats totaled 353 yards on the ground.

The Wildcats broke a 45-year-old record with the 787 yards of total offense. The old record was set in 1969 against New Mexico when they totaled 691 yards.

It's on to Texas on Thursday and a meeting with the University of Texas at San Antonio, winners tonight over Houston, 27-7. The UTSA team is called the Roadrunners and they'd better be ready for a foot race...the Wildcats are on their way.

It's time for the Arizona Wildcats to take the field

Arizona Wildcats Football

Kickoff is just hours away. The 2014 University of Arizona football season should be a good one with a new quarterback and some new faces. Out of the pile tonight, someone will emerge as the face of the Wildcats for 2014.

Let's tee it up!

Ironwood Ridge Frosh 28 Cienega 14

Ironwood Ridge High School Freshmen Football

The Ironwood Ridge High School freshmen football team opened their season today with a 28-14 win at Cienega over the Bobcats. Grandson Jadon Price rushed six times for 25 yards in his first start at wing back for the Nighthawks.

Ironwood Ridge, down 6-0 with five second left in the first half, scored on the final play before intermission when quarterback Noah Pallanes found Nick Brahler in the end zone on a 25-yard scoring play.

It was all Nighthawks in the second half as Ironwood went back to the running game -- scoring midway through the third quarter a 15-yard run up the middle by Diego Limon and then adding two fourth quarter scores on a 5-yard scamper by Pallanes and a 10-yard run by Brahler.

The Nighthawks added four points in the second half, tacking on two 2-point conversions -- one by Pallanes on a run to the right corner of the end zone and the other by Price with a 2-yard scamper to the left corner of the end zone.

Price, nursing a leg injury, played the entire game, gutting it out on both ends of the ball -- playing the right corner back position on defense and the wing back spot on offense.

Jadon and the Nighthawks (1-0) go for their second win next Thursday at home against Marana.

It's all Kershaw at Chase Field tonight

Arizona Diamondbacks

Clayton Kershaw improves to 16-3 and becomes the first pitcher in the majors to reach 16 wins this season as he beats the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-1.

Kershaw, who allowed no earned runs in the game, got better as the game progressed, retiring 12 of the final 13 batters he faced. He struck out 10.

The Dodgers improve to 76-58 and the Diamondbacks fall to 55-78 -- 23 games below the .500 mark.

Pigpen outlasts "Dennis the Menace"

TOTS Senior Baseball Network

60-and-over baseball

Lance closes in on TOTS' longevity record

It was a hot and humid morning at Udall Park.

Still, the members of the Tucson Old Timers (TOTS), the oldest organized baseball team in the country, hustled out to their positions -- yet another baseball encounter for the never-say-die players, ranging in age from 60 to 89.

Today's contest pitted hard-throwing right hander Danny "Pigpen" Price, 69, and crafty lefty Dennis "the Menace" Crowley, age 64.
Crowley, who turns 65 in October, kept Team Blue at bay for most of the game, but did give up a two-run single in the second inning to 89-year-old Floyd Lance. Team Blue would add three more runs to their total and eventually held on for 5-4 win over Team White.

Lance actually turns 89 on Sept. 6 -- but who's counting. Floyd, the oldest active player in the organization, has already received his new jersey -- number 89 -- and is proudly wearing it on the field of play. Every year he changes his number and is now just a year away from tying the record as  the oldest active player in the history of the TOTS. The organization was founded in 1968.

The record for longevity on the TOTS belongs to Clarence Fieber, who was active with the organization -- as a catcher, mind you -- at the age of 90. Clarence played in 120 games as a 90-year-old in 2010. Fieber passed away in May of 2011, just 13 days shy of his 91st birthday.

Today's game was called after five innings. The reasoning: Just too darn HUMID!

Pigpen Price picks up the win, despite walking three batters in the fifth inning and asking for relief help from youngster Lloyd Barzell (Lloyd turns 64 in less than 24 hours). Clinging to a 5-3 lead, Barzell coaxed the first batter into hitting into a double play and then recorded the final out of the game on a ground out to short as Team Blue, and Pigpen, walked away with a hard-fought, uniform-soaking-wet victory.

Come on weather, give us a break. Give us some coolness in the air.

Could it be a LA World Series?

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks lost 9-5 last night to the NL West division leaders, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers remain in first place with a 75-58 record, as for the Diamondbacks, do I have to put their season record in print one more time? Okay...55-77.

The quick two-game series ends today at Chase Field with Clayton Kershaw (15-3) going for the Dodgers and Wade Miley (7-9) for the Diamondbacks.

Could it be a LA World Series?

The Angels are in first place in the AL West.  Oakland still just one game back. It could happen. The Los Angeles Angels (78-53) vs. The Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Angels, with the best record in baseball with 31 regular season games to go, blew by the Marlins last night, 8-2. Mike Trout and Albert Pujols knocked in key runs in the game. There's a duo for you, no wonder the Angels sit atop their division!

It's time for some Ironwood Ridge football

Ironwood Freshmen Football

My grandson, Jadon Price, is growing up.

Jadon will don a different football jersey this season as he graduates into freshman football at Ironwood Ridge High School.

And what a program it is. He may be a year or two away from the varsity, but he's right where he needs to be as the 2014 season gets underway on Thursday at Cienega High School. Game time is 4 p.m. and is one of nine games Jadon will participate in this season.

Jadon has been working out in the starting lineup -- on offense as a wing-back and on defense as a corner back. Two active and tough positions. He's already nursing a leg injury and will have to "man-up" for the opener.

Football is a tough sport, especially when you are 5-feet-8 and weigh in the neighborhood of 145 pounds. The Ironwood coaching staff has had Jadon and his teammates in the weight room over the summer and he's bulking up a bit -- may even look like "Hercules" by his senior year.

Young men, participating in the world of sports today, have a lot going for them as they strive to become the best they can be in the sport of their choosing.

Good luck, Jadon and go for PAYDIRT!

Arizona football just five days away

Arizona Wildcats Football

The clock is ticking. We're just five days away from the kickoff to the 2014 University of Arizona football season. Hard to believe a new season is upon us.

Depending on which media outlet you subscribe to the Wildcats are looking at a 6-6, 7-5, 8-4 or a 9-3 season. Nine wins and three losses may be stretching it a bit, but I'm a die-hard Arizona fan and let's go for it. Nine wins, okay. Rose Bowl? Probably not. But, as I say, I'm a die-hard fan, so until I see on paper that the Wildcats are heading for someplace other than the Big Daddy of Them All, I'll continue to smell the roses for a while.

We have a number of quarterbacks this season. The big question: Will another B.J. Denker emerge from the huddle or will it be a week-to-week decision by Coach Rich Rodriquez to pencil in the Wildcats' signal-caller?

Showing my age, quarterbacks aren't referred to as signal-caller's in this day in age. But, it's obvious the new Arizona quarterback will need to run like a Denker and pass like a Nick Foles.

Speaking of Mr. Foles, isn't he the starter in Philadelphia and the two backups for the Eagles are former Pac-12 QBs -- Mark Sanchez (Pac 10 for Mr. Sanchez, of course) and Matt Barkley?

Come Friday night it'll be UNLV in town and the Wildcats should come out the victors. Whether it is anywhere close to a 58-13 riot like it was last year in Las Vegas, remains to be seen. Then, it is on to the University Texas-San Antonio on Sept. 4 and back home on Sept. 13 to take on Nevada.

Should be 3-0 at that point.

Then it gets a bit tougher with nine Pac-12 games in eleven weeks. The two open dates are on Sept. 27 and Oct. 18. By the time Nov. 28 rolls around, we'll know if the final regular season game against the hated Sun Devils from Arizona State will mean anything. Of course, if you're a die-hard Arizona fan like I am, then of course it means something...it means EVERYTHING!

And as an added bonus, we get the Sun Devils AT HOME! Win all of our home games, steal a couple on the road and PRESTO we have nine wins.

What we don't know is how the old "injury bug" will decide to show itself. Come on Wildcats, stay healthy please! Oh, yes. I can hear the fans at Arizona Stadium. That slow building roar just before the opening kick soars down the field. Now, if we could just get some coolness in the AIR!

Good luck, Wildcats. Have a great season.

Padres beat Diamondbacks, grab 600th win for Black

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks fall to the San Diego Padres 7-4 today at Chase Field and end up winning 2 of 3 in the series, but drop to 55-76 on the season. The Padres, with the win, hand their manager Bud Black his 600th win with San Diego.

The Diamondbacks take a day off and then take on the LA Dodgers in a two-game series, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

South Korea wins Little League World Series

Little League World Series

South Korea applied the pressure for six innings and won the 2014 Little League World Series 8-4 today over Chicago Jackie Robinson West in South Williamsport, Pa.

The Chicago team, winner of the U.S title over Nevada on Saturday, couldn't hang through the middle innings with the Korean team, the international bracket winner, but fought until the very end when they rallied for three runs the bottom of the sixth inning.

South Korea, who went unbeaten in 1984 and 1985 to win the LLWS, did it again this year, as they ran the table -- devouring all their opponents.

Diamondbacks get by Padres again

The Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks take another one from the Padres at Chase Field last night, 5-2. Jake Lamb hits his first homer as a member of the Diamondbacks and Didi Gregorius hits his sixth -- a three run shot.

Arizona is now 55-75 on the season.

A fleeting moment in time

TOTS Senior baseball Network

60-and-over baseball

I look back at the all the years gone by. As I edge closer to seventy, I enjoy the time with my teammates -- teammates on the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers. How long can we play and how long can we go on?

We move to our left. We move to our right. We track down a fly ball. We play the game of baseball into our 60s, our 70s and our 80s. We love the game.

Baseball! We have our Field of Dreams. And, we love every minute of it.

Chicago's Jackie Robinson West wins U.S. Little League title

Little League World Series

It's good to be home, D'backs win

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks returned to Chase Field tonight after a grueling road trip and enjoyed the home cooking, experiencing a 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres.

Josh Collmenter pitches brilliantly and improves to 9-7 and Miguel Montero provides the big blow with a two-run homer. Series continues tonight.

Bigham's opposite field triple a game winner

TOTS Senior Baseball Network

60-and-over baseball

Seventy-five-year-old Chico Bigham is another one of the "boy wonders" on the Tucson Old Timers 60-and-over baseball team.

He doesn't get old, he just gets better as the 15-year veteran on the oldest organized baseball team in the country, drilled an opposite field RBI triple in the sixth inning today at Udall Park to lead his team to a 10-9 win.

It was a nip and tuck battle from the get go today as Team White's Lloyd Barzell battled Team Blue's  Dan Lundwall in a pitcher's duel. With the score deadlocked and a runner on first base, Bigham waited on a fastball from Lundwall and sent a shot into right field, which bounced just inside the first baseline. By the time Team Blue's 82-year-old right-fielder Jerry Smarik caught up with the ball, the winning run had crossed the plate and Bigham jogged into third.

Bigham, one of the top pitchers on the TOTS, played third today and continued with a hot bat at the plate. He's maintained  a .500 batting average since June.

Lundwall pitched well but was saddled with the loss, while Barzell picked up the win as both pitchers went the distance.

The TOTS will be back at it on Monday and will close out the month with games on Wednesday and Friday. Game time for all three games is set for 9 a.m.

Nationals win 10th straight

Arizona Diamondbacks

Chalk up another loss for our poor Arizona Diamondbacks. They fail to score and lose the getaway game to the Washington Nationals, 1-0.

The Diamondbacks collect just four hits and lose the game in the bottom of the ninth on a throwing error by third baseman Jordan Pacheco.

Arizona falls to 53-75 and head back to Phoenix to begin an eight-game home stand. The D'backs will tangle with the San Diego Padres at Chase Field on Friday night.

Billy's Victory finally getting some exposure

Billy's Victory

My baseball fiction book, Billy's Victory,  on kindle books is finally getting some exposure. "Billy" made the top 100 in the children's baseball fiction category this week. Alright, it is No. 100, but that's something to build on. It'll be fun to see if "Billy" makes it out of the dugout and rises in the rankings.

By the way, the No.1 book in the above mentioned category is entitled "Heat" by Mike Lupica, the well-known sportswriter and a former columnist for the New York Post, as well as an ESPN anchor on The Sports Reporters.

Now if I could just catch Mike, I'd be a happy camper.

Pigpen to return

TOTS Senior Baseball Network

60-and-over baseball

After a month layoff, Pigpen Price will return to the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS). Price will come off the disabled list after nursing an on-again-off-again bone spur problem in the left foot and will return to action on Monday, Aug. 25.

At the ripe old age of 69, Price is not alone on the TOTS with those awful spurs. "They seem to be everywhere, hands, feet and elbows. I thought spurs were something a cowboy wears, but I guess the spurs are more of calcium deficiency and certainly not something John Wayne would have attached to his dusty boots -- back in the day," says Price, a member of the senior baseball organization since 2008.

In any case, it'll be a big kick to be back on the field of play.

Disastrous road trip almost over for Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks

By the end of the day, the Arizona Diamondbacks will be catching a flight and heading home from  a disastrous 10-game road trip. The D'backs play the getaway game in Washington today against the high-flying Nationals -- winners of nine straight. Arizona has just two wins thus far on the trip and are 5-13 for the month of August -- not counting today's encounter.

I feel bad for them. Undoubtedly, the Diamondbacks would just as soon see the season end today, but they return home with 34 games left on the regular schedule.

It's tough, hang in there D'backs!

TOTS players prepare for 2014 MSBL/MABL Word Series

TOTS Senior Baseball Network

60-and-over baseball

It isn't that far away.

The Phoenix-based 2014 Men's Senior Baseball League World Series is just around the corner. Well, it's actually in mid-October, but the summer is flying by and some of the members of the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers who will participate in the prestigious senior extravaganza have just sixty-five days (as of Oct. 13) to fine tune their old baseball skills.

Coaching the 70-and-over Arizona Scorpions again this year will be Jerry Hamelin and managing the 65-and-over Tucson Aces will be Pete Peters.

On the 70-and-over Scorpions roster are TOTS regulars Chico Bigham, Ron Petersen, Jeff Helzel,  Pigpen Price and Arnie White, along with Tony Bonillas, who is a member of the crosstown 60-and-over team, the Arizona Rattlers. The list of out-of-towners on the Scorpions include Tom Barrow (Westcliff, Colorado), Jorge Fuentes (Fajardo, Puerto Rico), Marcos Garcia (Ensenada, Puerto Rico), Spyke Graham (Paradise Valley, Arizona), Don Kladstrup (Paris, France), Dohrman Sinclair (Surprise, Arizona), Tony Contreres (Surprise, Arizona), Phil Webster (Camby, Indiana) and Jay Hayner (Saratoga, New York).

On the 65-and-over Aces roster are TOTS regulars Dave Rhoades, Dennis Crowley, Bob Daliege, George  Gafner (Arizona Rattlers), Brian Reilly, Tim Tolson and Joe Opocensky. The two out-of-towners on this year's roster will include Reece Wellman (Delaware, Maryland) and Jorge Ponce (El Paso, Texas). Peters will be a player-manager for the Aces.

Playing on both the 65s and the 70s will be Pigpen Price, Ron Petersen, Arnie White and Chico Bigham, barring injuries, or course.

It's a grueling two weeks for the players attempted to play in both divisions. Each team is guaranteed  five games and if they qualify for the playoffs, they could play an additional three games. For the players participating in both weeks that could add up to 16 games during the two-week period.

The Arizona Scorpions tournament opener will be on Sunday, Oct. 19. The Tucson Aces will be begin play on Saturday, Oct. 25.

Diamondbacks lose in 10 innings to Rockies

Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona had a chance to sweep the lowly Rockies at Chase Field today, but Colorado scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning and skipped town, winning the getaway game, 5-3. Reliever Oliver Perez (2-2) gives up a home run and a single and the D-backs let one get away.

The Diamondbacks fall to 51-67 and head out on a 10-game road trip, the first stop is Cleveland and a two-game set on Tuesday and Wednesday. This will be a brutal trip for Arizona as they begin to count the innings and what's left of a disastrous season.

The D-backs and the Rockies, the worst two teams in the NL West, are bringing up the minor league players to finish it off. Today's roster for both teams was a far cry from the everyday roster back in April. Jake Lamb, Xavier Paul, Jordan Pacheco, Alfredo Marte, Tuffy Gosewisch...the list goes on, maybe they'll find a diamond in the rough by the end of the season.

Johnny Dugan at 20,000 words and counting!

From my laptop...

I'm rolling along with the Return of Johnny Dugan, a baseball book for everyone. I just blew by 20,000 words on "Johnny" --  a new fiction book with characters like the McPherson brothers -- Bugs, Boomer, Bumper and Booker T from my original middle reader book, Billy's Victory. Now it's 1969, the McPherson brothers are seven years older and there's a new coach in town and a new backdrop up the road from Green River --  now a budding metropolis called Pearl City --- with baseball fans galore, including Sam Marino, a grounds-keeper at Rasmussen Stadium, who battles the odds in hopes of restoring the old ballpark in time for the Pearl City Pirates season opener.

There's more to Johnny Dugan than meets the eye and the baseball fans of Pearl City discover more and more about the new stranger in town as the book progresses.

When I get up every morning and peck away at the old laptop, I'm not sure if I'm in Tucson, Arizona or Pearl City, Colorado.

Stay tuned!

Note: you can find Billy's Victory and my recent adult book, The Legend of Bucket Smith at the Kindle store on Amazon.com. Go to the book search at: amazon.com/kindlebooks

Diamondbacks make it to 50 wins

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks win at Chase Field tonight 5-3 over the Colorado Rockies. Miguel Montero belts a three-run homer and Chase Anderson pitches five innings and gets the win to move to 7-4 on the year.

David Peralta steals the highlight reel of the night by stealing home in the seventh inning.

The Diamondbacks (50-66) finish up the three-game series with the Rockies this weekend and then head to Cleveland on Tuesday to face the Indians.

It's good news for Pigpen Price.

No busted heel spurs, no broken bones.

"I few more weeks of rest," the doctor says, "and then play at your own peril."

At any rate, I still have a future in old-time baseball and the Men's Senior Baseball World Series in October is still a go for this old man.

Now, if I can just stay off the playing field until September.

First order of business is to stretch out the Achilles tendon. Doc says I need to do some exercises.

I'll be back!

Barzell top hitter on TOTS for July

TOTS Senior Baseball Network

60-and-over baseball

Lloyd Barzell topped the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) in hitting for the month of July. Barzell went 22 for 35 for a .629 batting average. He played in 11 games and was second in runs scored with 14, one behind the leader in that category, Brian Reilly (15).

Tim Tolson, who played in eight games and batted .609 (14 for 23), once again was the RBI leader for the month with 14 -- including one home run, the only homer by a TOT in the month of July. Mike Steele, for the second month in a row, swung a hot bat. Steele played in eight games and went 17 for 28 for a healthy . 607 average.

It was also a good month for Pete Peters, who played in nine games, while going 16 for 26 and a batting average of .615. Chico Bigham batted an even .500 for the month (15 for 30) and finished in a tie for second on the club in RBI with 10, along with Barzell.

Once again, in the 80-and-over group, it was 88-year-old Floyd Lance leading the way with a .440 batting average (11 for 25 in 11 games).

Returning to action in July was Mike Taylor and he made the most of his at bats. Taylor, who recently recovered from a foot injury, went 12 for 15 in six games and batting an incredible .800.

As the 60-and-over club heads into August, it looks more and more like a seven-man race for the most hits for the year. With five months left in the 2014 season, Barzell not only leads in hits with 169, but is well on his way to breaking the club record in that department, held by Bigham (228 hits, in 2005).

Peters is in hot pursuit of Barzell with 162 hits, while the other five -- Brian Rielly (117), Chico Bigham (115), Tim Tolson (110), Pigpen Price (107) and Dennis Crowley (102) have some catching up to do.

Five months left. It's a long season.

Diamondbacks salvage 1 of 3 with Pirates

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks win 3-2 today at Chase Field and salvage one of the three games with the Pittsburgh Pirates -- the winning run crosses the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning when the runner, Nick Ahmed, was hit by a throw from Pirates second baseman Jayson Nix, during a potential double play relay.

Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle argued the call, but the D-backs prevailed and improve to 49-63 and await the beginning of a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.

Goldy and me...

It hasn't been a good week for D-backs' first baseman Paul Goldschimdt and for the Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) third baseman, Pigpen Price.

Goldy is drilled by Pittsburgh's Ernesto Frieri on Friday -- the inside and high pitch hit Goldy just above the ring finger on his left hand. With 50 games to go in the season, chances are Goldschmidt will be out for the remainder of the D-backs regular schedule. There will be no postseason for the Diamondbacks, so Goldy can look toward 2015. But what a 109-game season for Goldschmidt! He led the National League in doubles and extra-base hits, tied for first in runs scored, second in total bases and third in RBIs and walks.

The big hitters in the NL and the AL will pass him by as the season heads into the final lap.

What a shame!

As for me, it's the case of another fractured bone spur as I head to the foot surgeon on Friday for x-rays. Played three games in a row last week -- Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday morning I couldn't walk -- couldn't put pressure on my left foot.

It was just three years ago when I had the same thing happen to my right foot. I was out for four months following the surgery. Jury is still out on whether I can suit up for the MSBL/MABL World Series in Phoenix, which gets underway in mid-October.

Until then, it'll be just me and my laptop.
