60-and-over baseball

It was another close one at Udall Park this morning.

Team Blue slipped by Team White 6-5 in a Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) baseball game. Team Blue used a three-run fifth inning to take the lead for good thanks in part to 63-year-old rookie Tom Potter who drilled a single over the head of right fielder Joe Aparicio to plate two of the three runs.

Team Blue also received RBI-singles from Jesse Ochoa and Chico Bigham, while Bob Katz picked up the final run on a bases-loaded walk.

Ron Petersen knocked in two runs for Team White, while Pigpen Price, Pete Peters and Jerry Hamelin singled in runs. Petersen pitched five innings and was saddled with the loss, while Lloyd Barzell hurled all six innings for Team Blue and picked up the win.

The catch of the day goes to Team White outfielder Jerry Smarik, Smarik, 81, moved to his left and made a one-handed catch on a shot to the gap in right center in the fourth inning by Bigham.

The TOTS will be back at it on Monday morning.

Go, TOTS!
