Freshman runner gets it done

Trevor Crain (above photo) is a freshman at Empire High School, the son of Lydia and Danny Crain and the grandson of my better half, Sue Crain. Trevor left his junior high school days behind last year and left Rincon Vista Middle School in Vail as the school's top miler, consistently putting in times near the five-minute mark.

Small in stature but with a big heart, Trevor continues to run and is the top freshman runner on the Empire High School boy's varsity cross country team. He consistently placed in regular season meets the entire season and capped his season off with the 21st best qualifying time at last week's sectionals.

The top 25 runners qualified for the state meet, which is scheduled for Saturday morning at the Cave Creek Course in Phoenix. The experience at the state meet will give the young runner a taste of what running against the state's "cream of the crop" will be like as he will undoubtedly return for his sophomore, junior and senior season. Trevor has made giant strides in just his first year of high school competition. It'll be interesting to see how he puts it all together as he journeys toward his senior year. But first things first, Trevor is just hours away from his first state meet.

Congrats, Trevor.

  1. Update: April 18, 2014. Trevor, now a sophomore at Empire High School, runs a 4:43...his PR. Way to go, Trevor.
