Smokin' Joe Frazier...gone at 67
I was 25 years old in 1971...and back then boxing was BIG. The fighters were bigger then life. At theaters, on the wide-screen (if you were lucky enough to have the time off, had money in your pocket and could afford to watch the matches live), the fighters looked like warriors, battling it out in the center of the ring for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world.
One of the greatest fighters of all time, Smokin' Joe Frazier, who won the heavyweight title with a 15-round decision over Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden in The Fight of the Century on March 8, 1971, died today of liver cancer. He was 67 years old.
