TOTS' pitcher tosses a 2-hitter and catches a bus

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Most of the players on the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers are retired. After all, you have to be at least 60 to play for the amateur baseball organization.

John Mathews, 61, is one of the younger players on the TOTS who still works for a living. So what happened at Udall Park today is not unusual if you are one of the "young studs" on the club.

Mathews, a tall left hander, tossed a two-hitter through five innings before giving way to his relief pitcher, Bob Daliege, in the sixth inning. Why would any pitcher want to come out of the game after pitching such a gem?

John had to catch a bus. Well, in reality he's a bus driver and needed to report to work.

The big lefty barely had time to check in, take his familiar seat behind the wheel and go to work. Chances are he's driving down Broadway, at this very moment, and chances are he might be reliving what he had accomplished at Udall Park today.

Mathews and Team Blue won the game 7-1 over Team White. And according to Mathews, he was pleased with his effort today. "I felt pretty good out there. I think the run was unearned."

That, of course, is not unusual for the TOTS. Normally, there are a lot of unearned runs scored.

Still, a two-hitter and no earned runs is something to tell the wife about when you get home after a tough "outing"  at Udall Park...and after a long shift as a bus driver.

Way to go, Big John.
