TOTS night game set for Nov. 8

TOTS Senior Baseball Network (TSBN)

60-and-over baseball

The Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) baseball club will display its own brand of "Friday Night Lights" on Nov. 8 at Udall Park.

The baseball club will play under the lights for the first time ever. Known primarily for their early-morning, three-days a week games at Udall Park, the 60-and-over TOTS will play a 6 PM  game. The TOTS will play seven-innings or for two hours, whichever comes first.

There may be a run on night goggles at the local hardware store. The TOTS players range in age from 60 to 88 and are used to playing in direct sunlight. High fly balls will make for an interesting play.

Kidding aside, the game will pit Team Blue against Team White and the starting pitchers for the night game include 63-year-old Lloyd Barzell and 76-year-old Ed Rife. Both pitcher are right handers. Barzell has been a TOT since 2010 and Rife joined the organization in 2000.

Jerry Smarik, 81 and a TOT since 1991, will open the pregame ceremony with his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Smarik (photo below) has been playing the saxophone about as long as he's swung a bat.

Channel 13 will be on hand to record the event and the game is open to the public and there is no charge.  So, be there or be square...and no laughing, please.
