Cardinals stumble out of the gate in World Series opener

2013 MLB World Series

The St. Louis Cardinals are a very good defensive team, but they didn't show it tonight at Fenway Park in Boston as three costly errors led to an 8-1 win for the Boston Red Sox in the 2013 World Series opener.

Jon Lester cruised to an easy win as he hurled 7 2/3 innings, striking out eight and walking just one batter. Adam Wainwright pitched the first five innings for St. Louis and gave up five runs -- three of which were unearned.

David Ortiz homered for Boston in the seventh inning. The ball traveled 408 feet. Matt Holliday homered in the top of the ninth inning for the Cardinals.

Game 2 will be in Boston tomorrow night as St. Louis sends Michael Wacha to the mound to face John Lackey.
