Thompson the TOTS' top gun in September
Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)
60-and-over baseball
Doc Thompson, 76, was on fire at the plate during the month of September. Thompson burned the TOTS' pitching staff for 22 hits in 35 at bats for a hefty .629 batting average and led the club in RBI with 17.
If Thompson was on fire, Lloyd Barzell, 68, was certainly smoldering -- finishing second in hits for the month with 16 hits in 34 at bats -- a .471 average. Barzell led the club in runs scored with 16.
Seven other players reached double digits in hits for the month. Tim Tolson and Mike Dawson went 15 for 26, while Mike Steele collected 12 hits in 26 at bats. Pigpen Price went 11 for 27, Pete Maldonado went 11 for 25, John Mathews collected 10 hits in 23 at bats and Dennis Crowley banged out 10 hits in 26 at bats.
Dawson and Crowley were the top pitchers for the month -- both with identical 2-1 records.
September was another hot and humid month. The TOTS should enjoy cooler weather in October. The TOTS first official game for October ended up in an 8-8 tie this morning at Udall. The next game is scheduled for Friday. Game time: 9 a.m.
