Come back, Shane!

Two years ago, I was an assistant volleyball coach at a middle school. The head coach, Amy Burton, usually brought her teenage son along and many times he would assist me with putting up the nets, chasing down bouncing volleyballs, and assisting with drills as I put a group of sixth and seventh graders through a daily practice session. Sometimes, before and after practice, we'd grab a basketball and have a little shoot-around and then follow up with a game of H-O-R-S-E.

The kid was quick, could shoot and had a lot of basketball savvy. The young man said he was going to play in high school...a guard maybe. He couldn't wait for that day to come. Well, that time is now. Shane Burton is a sophomore at Cienega High School. A starting guard on the Bobcats' squad. Shane averaged 12 points a game during the regular season and will lead Cienega tonight against Phoenix Brophy Prep in Phoenix. Game time 7 p.m. Come back, Shane! Come back, with a Division 1 title for the Bobcats.

Shane Update: Shane Burton scores 10 points to lead the Bobcats, but Cienega falls to Brophy, 62-34, last night in Phoenix and were eliminated from the playoffs. Great season, Shane. Your first two years as a Bobcat have been AWESOME!
