Tucson Toros roll in MSBL WS opener

Men's Senior Baseball League World Series

 65-and-over Cactus 1 Division

The Tucson Toros took on the Southern Cal Fire in the first round today at the Men's Senior Baseball League World Series in Tempe.

As it turns out, it was the Tucson team that was on fire as the Toros exploded for a 13-3 win and an opening round victory in the Cactus 1 Division of the 65-and-over MSBL World Series.

Rudy Duarte, from the Tucson Old Pueblo Club, went the distance, allowing no earned runs and he had plenty of support at the plate, especially from the five players on the team from the Tucson Old Timers.

The five members from the TOTS -- Ken Nebesny, Joe Opocensky, Tim Tolson, Mike Dawson and John Mathews -- combined for nine hits and six RBI to lead the Toros to an easy first-round win. Opocensky collected a single and a triple, Nebesny had two hits, Tolson had two hits, Mathews banged out two hits, while Dawson had one hit, scored twice and stole a base.

The Toros head for Fitch Park in Mesa tomorrow for a 2 p.m. game against the CA Vets. The Cal Vets beat the Lehigh Valley Moondogs, 6-5, today.
