The 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers are enjoying their 52nd season (1968-present). Over the years, more than 250 players have worn a TOTS' uniform and have moseyed up to the plate and banged out their share of hits.
It's not unusual for a player to participate in 75 to 90 games a season and on the average maybe 5 to 7 players will play over 100 games in a single season. It's not unusual for a player, who logs 100 games, to step to the plate 350 times with a chance each time to bang out a single, a double, a triple and, for a select few -- a home run.
The "rule of thumb" or the most telling statistic the club goes by is the number of hits a player can garner in a single season. A TOTS' season is 12 months long and the club schedules games every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Udall Park.
For instance, Thunder Tim Tolson, 67, played in 101 games in 2019. Tolson (above photo) batted 336 times, walked eight times, scored 104 runs, hit seven home runs, knocked in a team-high 134 runs and finished the year with a .571 batting average. As another example, Reed Palmer played in exactly 100 games and finished 2019 with a hefty .659 batting average. Palmer scored 133 runs, knocked in 112 runs and led the club in home runs with 17. Palmer, 63, batted 341 times and collected 184 hits. Due to his home run power, Palmer was walked 62 times, which left him with 279 official at bats.
Of course, you need to take in account the ages of the TOTS. The youngest TOT is 61 and the oldest TOT is 94. So, it stands to reason, the youngsters will undoubtedly collect the most hits. Of course, the older TOT has had his day on the hit parade list. For instance, Denny Leonard, 82, is still "a regular" and back in 2003 collected 185 hits, good enough to remain among the top-30 on the all-time single-season hits list.
