Arizona loses 3rd in a row

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats lost their third Pac-12 Conference game in a row, falling to UCLA tonight at the Pauley Pavilion, 69-64.

They also lost their coach with 12:28 remaining in the game. Sean Miller was ejected with the Wildcats up, 47-44. Arizona was called for 26 fouls and the Bruins went to the foul line 38 times and made 29 free throws, while the Wildcats were 10 of 16 from the charity stripe.

Arizona led 33-27 at halftime and were up 52-46 when Nico Mannion knocked down a 3-pointer with 10:59 remaining in the game.

Arizona scored just 12 points the rest of the way.

Mannion played his best game in weeks, finishing with 19 points, two rebounds, six assists, two steals and turned the ball over just once as the Wildcats once again played without the services of guard Josh Green.

Another frustrating loss as Arizona falls to the middle of the Pac-12 Conference with a 9-7 record and UCLA bolts to the top of the conference standings at 12-5. The Wildcats are now 19-10 overall and the Bruins have won seven in a row and are 19-11 overall.

Petersen leads Team White to 5-3 TOTS' win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Ron Petersen, 74, went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs to lead Team White to a 5-3 win over Team Blue today at Udall Park in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

Team White's Doc Thompson allowed just three hits and one run in five innings of work and Reed Palmer pitched the final two innings and ended up with the win. Thompson hasn't pitched this season and decided five innings was enough for today.

"I felt pretty good, but I didn't want to push it." Thompson said.

Palmer took the mound in the top of the sixth with Team White up 3-1, but found himself in trouble when Ken Nebesny singled in a run and Pigpen Price tied the game with a single over the bag at third base.

In the bottom of the sixth, Team White regained the lead for good on RBI doubles from Steve Foster and Petersen. Team Blue tried to come back in the top of the seventh and received a single from Brack Whitaker and a double by Roger Beebe, but both runners were left stranded when Palmer got the final out on a force play to end the game.

The TOTS will take the weekend off and return to action on Monday at Udall. Game time: 10 a.m.

Arizona misfires on 41 FG attempts in loss at USC

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats made just 16 of 57 shots at USC and lose to the Trojans 57-48 tonight at the Galen Center.

Do the math and you'll come up with a miserable 28 percent from the field and a dismal 11.5 percent from beyond the 3-point line, canning just 3 of 26 attempts.

Zeke Nnaji managed a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Nico Mannion, despite missing 11 shots from the field, finished with 11 points.

Arizona falls to 19-9 on the season and 9-6 in the Pac-12 Conference.

The Wildcats are at UCLA on Saturday.

Tolson owns TOTS' record for most hits in a single season

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

The 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers are enjoying their 52nd season (1968-present). Over the years, more than 250 players have worn a TOTS' uniform and have moseyed up to the plate and banged out their share of hits.

It's not unusual for a player to participate  in 75 to 90 games a season and on the average maybe 5 to 7 players will play over 100 games in a single season. It's not unusual for a player, who logs 100 games, to step to the plate 350 times with a chance each time to bang out a single, a double, a triple and, for a select few -- a  home run.

The "rule of thumb" or the most telling statistic the club goes by is the number of hits a player can garner in a single  season. A TOTS' season is 12 months long and the club schedules games every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Udall Park.

For instance, Thunder Tim Tolson, 67, played in 101 games in 2019. Tolson (above photo) batted 336 times, walked eight times, scored 104 runs, hit seven home runs, knocked in a team-high 134 runs and finished the year with a .571 batting average. As another example, Reed Palmer played in exactly 100 games and finished 2019 with a hefty .659 batting average. Palmer scored 133 runs, knocked in 112 runs and led the club in home runs with 17. Palmer, 63, batted 341 times and collected 184 hits. Due to his home run power, Palmer was walked 62 times, which left him with 279 official at bats.

Of course, you need to take in account the ages of the TOTS. The youngest TOT is 61 and the oldest TOT is 94. So, it stands to reason, the youngsters will undoubtedly collect the most hits. Of course, the older TOT has had his day on the hit parade list. For instance, Denny Leonard, 82, is still "a regular" and back in 2003 collected 185 hits, good enough to remain among the top-30 on the all-time single-season hits list.

Listed below are the top-30:

Hits in a single season               Name               season/year

Peters, Dawson, Boxberger combine for 9 hits in TOTS' win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Pete Peters, 70, has suddenly found his grove at the plate.

Peters led Team White to a 14-4 lopsided win over Team Blue today at Udall Park in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

Nicknamed Pistol Pete, Peters has been firing on all cylinders in his last two games. Last Friday, Peters singled and doubled and was on base four times and scored two runs to help his team to a 10-7 win and today it was more of the same with three more hits -- including another double and a walk, while scoring three runs.

There was a time a few years ago when Peters, a TOT since 2011, would consistently garner over 200 hits a season. Peters is not really in a slump, but has taken some time off from playing. The hard-hitting, right-handed hitter is back to his old tricks -- drilling shots down the line, up the middle and into the gaps.

"It's about time I got some hits," Peters said, after the game.

Peters also had plenty of help today as teammates Danny Boxberger and Mike Dawson matched him in hits with three apiece. Team White's starting pitcher Joe Opocensky went the distance today to pick up the win, while Bob Daliege was saddled with the loss.

Ken Nebesny led Team Blue today with two hits and two runs scored, while teammate Reed Palmer knocked in three of the four runs.

The TOTS will be back in action on Wednesday at Udall. Game time: 10 a.m.

Note: Pistol Pete's best two seasons with the TOTS:  2014  241 hits in 414 at bats (club leader) and 2015  233 hits in 419 at bats (2nd in hits).

Spring Training

Spring Training 2020

Spring training 2020 is underway.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, after a rainout on Saturday, are off and running today against the Oakland Athletics.

Wildcats off to 5-2 start

Arizona Wildcats Baseball

The Arizona Wildcats 2020 baseball team will take a 5-2 record into this week's action at Hi Corbett Field against Central Michigan (Feb. 26, 28) and Rhode Island (Feb. 29 and March 1). All games have a 6 p.m. start, except Sunday's final game with Rhode Island, which gets underway at noon.

Arizona made it a three-game sweep of Albany (12-7, 15-0, 11-3) at home to start the season, dropped an outing at Tempe Diablo Stadium to Minnesota, 5-2, and won 2 of 3 in San Diego, California over the weekend -- losing 4-1 to Iowa and besting Southern Illinois, 6-5, and Nebraska, 3-2, at the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament.

After seven games, Ryan Holgate leads Arizona in hitting with a .519 average (14 for 27). The Wildcats have already hit eight home runs -- two by Austin Wells, two by Blake Paugh and one each by Dayton Dooney, Mac Bingham, Branden Boissiere  and Holgate.

Oregon edges Arizona 73-72 at McKale

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

During the final eight minutes and 31 seconds of play, the Arizona Wildcats made just three field goals, missed 5 of 7 attempts from the foul line and ended up losing to 14th-ranked Oregon 73-72 tonight at McKale Center.

It was quite a day for college basketball, nationally and in the Pac-12 Conference, as Baylor, the No. 1 team in the nation, lost to No. 3 Kansas, while 4th-ranked, and previously unbeaten San Diego State lost its first game of the season to UNLV and if that wasn't enough of a shock to the college basketball world, 2nd-ranked Gonzaga falls to BYU.

Add to that a win by the Sun Devils in Tempe as Arizona State beats Oregon State to take over sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 Conference, while UCLA knocks off Colorado in Boulder.

Back at McKale, the Ducks and the Wildcats battled through regulation and a five-minute overtime to decide matters. With the score tied at 64-64, Josh Green was fouled with 2.0 seconds left in regulation, went to the line and missed both free throws.

Overtime would follow and Oregon took the lead  68-65 when Shakur Juiston made his second layup in overtime with 3:14 remaining, but Nico Mannion scored on a layup at the 2:49 mark to pull the Wildcats within one at 68-67. It was the Wildcats first field goal since Stone Gettings had scored on a put back with 3:31 left in regulation.

Fast forward to the one-minute mark in overtime, and Juiston tossed in another layup to give the Ducks a 71-70 lead. Arizona's Dylan Smith made a jumper with 34 seconds left to give the Wildcats the lead at 72-71, but Juiston would follow with his fourth layup in overtime with 1.4 seconds left on the clock.

A desperate full court pass by Jemarl Baker Jr. fell into the hands of Wildcat freshman Christian Koloko, who tried to toss in the game-winner, but was fouled by Payton Pritchard.

With 1.0 second remaining, Koloko went to the line and missed both free throws and Oregon escaped town with another win over the Wildcats.

Smith finished with 18 points to lead the Wildcats. Zeke Nnaji and Mannion ended up with 13 points apiece, while Gettings scored 11 and Green scored nine points.

All in all, a good night for Arizona State (19-8) as the Sun Devils sit atop the Pac-12 Conference at 10-4, while UCLA (17-11), Colorado (21-7) and Oregon (21-7) sit at 10-5 and Arizona falls to 19-8 overall and 9-5 in conference play.

Peters, Dawson, Garcia combine for 10 hits, 6 RBI in TOTS' win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Pete Peters, Mike Dawson and Ray Garcia combined for 10 hits and six RBI to lead Team Blue to a 10-7 win at Udall Park today in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

The game was tied at 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning when Dawson doubled in a run and Garcia followed with an RBI-single off Team White's starting pitcher Pete Maldonado. Pigpen Price reached on an error and another run crossed to plate to put Team Blue up, 9-6. Team Blue would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Team White scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and could have plated another run when Ken Nebesny, who had two hits and four RBI on the day, hit a shot up the middle, but Peters moved quickly to his left and gloved the ball behind second base. Peters' off-balance throw to Price at second base was in time to nip the runner for the second out of the inning.

Nebesny smiled and shook his head after the game.

"That was probably my best hit of the day," Nebesny said. "I thought the ball was through and on its way to the fence." The "play of the day" by Peters ended Team White's chances of a come-from-behind win.

Still, another competitive ball game in the books. Dawson pitched all seven innings for Team Blue, while Maldonado, a workhorse on the mound this week at Udall, went the distance as well and was saddled with the hard-luck loss.

Maldonado, 67, had pitched seven strong innings 48 hours earlier on Wednesday at Udall and walked away with a 6-1 win, allowing just four hits and no earned runs.

The TOTS will take the weekend off and return to action on Monday at Udall. Game time: 10 a.m.

Arizona rolls to 89-63 win over Oregon State

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats (19-7, 9-4) rolled to an easy 89-63 win at McKale tonight over the Oregon State Beavers. Four Wildcats scored in double figures with Josh Green leading the way with 18 points, four rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Oregon State lost the services of its star player Tres Tinkle midway through the second half when the 6-7 senior was whistled for his second technical foul of the game. Arizona was up 10 at the time and gradually pulled away, turning the game into a blowout. Tinkle was forced to spend the final 12 minutes in the visitors' locker room.

Arizona, ranked No. 24 this week in the AP College Basketball Poll, outscored the Beavers 49-33 in the second half.  Nico Mannion finished with 16 points and six assists, while Zeke Nnaji added 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Max Hazzard came off the bench and hit 3 of 6 three-pointers and finished the game with 15 points.

The Wildcats shot 43.8 percent from field, canning 28 of 64 attempts, while hitting 10 of 21 three-pointers -- a sizzling 47.6 percent.

Next up: 14th-ranked Oregon at McKale on Saturday.

Maldonado, Ryan lead Team White to 6-1 TOTS' win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Pete Maldonado allowed four hits and pitched seven strong innings as Team White beat Team Blue 6-1 today at Udall Park in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

Team Blue's leadoff batter Bob Daliege went 3 for 3 and Pigpen Price singled and that was it off Maldonado. Ron Ryan went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs for Team White.

Brad Vermeer pitched six innings for Team Blue and was saddled with the loss. Team Blue had a chance for a big rally in the sixth, but a running catch by Team White's Phil Gordon saved the day. With two runners on, John Mathews drilled a shot to right field, but Gordon ran it down to snuff out the rally and Maldonado would sail through the seventh to clinch the win.

The TOTS return to action on Friday at Udall. Game time: 10 a.m.

Tucson Aces thump Old Pueblo, 13-1

Tucson Aces

60-and-over baseball

The 60-and-over Tucson Aces have battled two south side teams for years -- the Arizona Rattlers and the Old Pueblo Club.

A few years ago, the Aces took in on the chin on a regular basis, but not anymore.

Today at Santa Rita Park, the Aces rolled to a 13-1 win over Old Pueblo and now own a nine-game combined winning streak over the two 60-and-over south-side teams.

Ernie Escala pitched five innings and earned the win for the Aces, while Mike Dawson came on in relief and hurled two scoreless innings. Reed Palmer and Tim Tolson were a combined 8 for 8 today with four runs scored and five RBI.

The Aces jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first inning and added another five runs by the end of the third  for a commanding 7-1 lead. The Aces received hits from 11 players and the rookie on the ball club -- 61-year-old Steve Foster, the youngest member of the club, collected two hits and drove in three runs, while the fleet-footed Tim Boyd reached base four times and scored three runs.

Way to go, Aces!

Arizona gets a Bay Area sweep

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats get a Bay Area sweep despite another poor performance from the field as they lead wire to wire tonight at Stanford and beat the Cardinal, 69-60.

Zeke Nnaji led the Wildcats with another double-double. Nnaji scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Arizona improved to 18-7 and 8-4 in the Pac-12 Conference.

Arizona went 20 of 54 (37.0 percent) from the field and made just 3 of 21 (14.3 percent) from beyond the arc, while committing 25 fouls. Nico Mannion spent some key minutes on the bench in the second half with four fouls, but Jemarl Baker Jr. took over for Mannion and finished the game with four points, three rebounds and one assist.

Josh Green also scored in double figures with 15 points and Dylan Smith, who made two key three-pointers in the game, finished with 11 points.

6-run 7th lifts Team Blue to 12-8 TOTS' win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Valentine's Day Game

Team Blue's hard-hitting lineup waited until the very end of today's 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game to unleash their bats.

Trailing 8-6 with one out in the top of the seventh inning, Team Blue's Ken Nebesny, Mike Dawson, Mike Steele, Reed Palmer, Dennis Crowley and Steve Foster came up with key hits off Team White's Pete Maldonado and turned a two-run deficit into a six-run rally for a 12-8 win over Team White.

It looked like Maldonado and Team White had things in control, but three walks with one out in the books proved costly and Team Blue's bats came alive. Steele led Team Blue with four RBI, including a two-run triple in the third and a two-run single in the seventh.

Team White's leadoff batter Roger Beebe went 3 for 4 today, while the hard-hitting Tim Tolson collected two hits and knocked in three runs.

Dawson pitched 1 1/3 innings and picked up the pitching victory in relief of Brad Vermeer.

The TOTS will take the weekend off and return to action at Udall on Monday. Game time: 10 a.m.

The Wildcats shoot 48.1 percent (25 of 52) from the field and end up 6 of 16 from beyond the arc. Nico Mannion was 3 of 9 from the field tonight, but scored 10 points and dished out five assists.

Arizona travels to Stanford on Saturday.

Runs were hard to come by at Udall Park today

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

The seven-inning game at Udall Park today lasted just one hour and 15 minutes.

Team Blue's Pete Maldonado and Team White's Joe Opocensky threw nothing but strikes.

Team White pulled out a 1-0 win over Team Blue and the only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when John Mathews drilled a double to left-center field off Maldonado. Mathews moved to third on a force play and scored what turned out to be the game-winner when he tagged up and scampered home on a line out to center field by Jesse Ochoa.

Team Blue's Joe Aparicio made the catch in center, but tried to double up the runner Mike Dawson at first base. The throw by Aparicio was off line and Mathews crossed home plate on the errant throw with what turned out to be the game-winner.

Both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning and Team Blue couldn't muster up a rally in the seventh.

Opocensky allowed just four hits in the game -- singles by Tim Tolson, Bob Daliege, Pigpen Price and Ron Ryan. Maldonado was impressive in his seven innings of work, but was saddled with the hard-luck loss.

The TOTS return to action on Wednesday at Udall. Game time: 10 a.m.

Arizona shoots just 25 percent from the field in loss to UCLA

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The Arizona Wildcats made more free throws than field goals tonight at McKale Center.

A dismal 25.4 percent from the field as UCLA walked away with a 65-52 win over the Wildcats and  Arizona falls to 16-7 overall and 6-4 in the Pac-12 Conference. Arizona, down 29-28 at the end of the first half, continued to falter from the field in the second half, scoring just 24 points.

The Wildcats canned 16 of 18 free throws. Arizona made 15 field goals out of 59 attempts.

It's hard to find something positive to say about this one. The Wildcats should forget what happened at McKale tonight, regroup and come out firing on all cylinders next week as they go back on the road to face California and Stanford.

Zeke Nnaji battled his way to another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He was 2 for 8 from the field with most of his points coming from the foul line. Nico Mannion went 2 of 14, Josh Green 3 of 11, Stone Gettings 3 of 5 and Dylan Smith, the fifth Wildcat starter, was 0 for 7 from the field.

A heart-breaking loss!

Mathews goes 5 for 5 in TOTS' win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Big John Mathews is back.

Back doing what he used to do and that's hit with power to all fields.

After battling medical issues for most of the winter, Mathews returned to form today with five hits in five trips to the plate. He knocked in four runs and scored three times to lead Team White to a 13-3 thumping over Team Blue in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game at Udall Park.

Mathews, 63, decided to grow a beard this winter. Since the hard-hitting, right-handed hitter has grown the facial hair, he looks even more intimidating when he steps to the plate to face the TOTS' pitchers. Today he faced one of the TOTS' top hurlers -- the hard-throwing Reed Palmer.

Mathews slashed hits to left, center and right field off Palmer, while two of his teammates -- Mike Dawson and Tim Tolson also hit well. Dawson with three hits today and Tolson went 4 for 5 and kept the Team Blue fielders busy. Dawson picked up the pitching victory and all three runs by Team Blue were unearned.

It's been a long winter for another TOT. Pigpen Price, 74,  has been nursing neck and hamstring injuries since October.

"I can't say I've battled back, not like John," says Price. "Nothing is working. I have a lot of days that I go hitless and my fielding is erratic. I'm just the opposite of John."

Medical issues are common with the TOTS' players. "It goes with the territory," Price adds. "It seems like the older you get, the harder it is to battle back from injuries or an illness."

But you can always count on a TOT bouncing back.

The TOTS will take the weekend off and return to action on Monday at Udall. Game time: 10 a.m.

Arizona edges USC, 85-80

 Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Arizona, despite a cold-shooting second half, held on to beat Southern California 85-80 tonight at the McKale Center to improve to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in the Pac-12 Conference.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 23 in the nation, led by 20 in the first half and took a 43-33 lead into the locker room, but midway through the second half, Arizona suddenly couldn't make a field goal. In fact, with 10 minutes to go, Ira Lee hit a jumper, and at the 8:23 mark Stone Gettings made a layup.

And that was it.

Arizona would have to win it at the foul line and the Wildcats made that interesting as well, canning 15 of 23 attempts down the stretch to hold off the Trojans, who out scored the Wildcats 47-42 in the second half.

Nico Mannion scored 20 points and dished out seven assists, while four of his teammates also finished in double figures. Josh Green netted 18 points as did Zeke Nnaji, who also grabbed 11 rebounds for another double-double. Gettings scored 12 and Lee came off the bench to contribute 10 points.

Next up: UCLA at McKale on Saturday.

Arizona back in the AP Poll top 25

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Arizona (15-6) returns to the top 25 in the AP College Basketball Poll.

The Wildcats are ranked No. 23 in the latest poll and with a sweep of USC and UCLA at home this week at McKale Center could easily move up in the rankings.

Go, Wildcats!

Opocensky, Tolson lead Team White to 5-3 TOTS' win

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Joe Opocensky and Tim Tolson combined for six hits and four RBI at Udall Park today as Team White edged Team Blue 5-3 in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

Ernie Escala pitched well for Team Blue, but the middle of the Team White lineup of Opocensky and Tolson were tough outs for Escala, who was saddled with the hard-luck loss. Opocensky went the distance on the mound for Team White and picked up the pitching victory.

Team Blue had plenty of hits today, but just couldn't get the runs across. Bob Daliege, Ken Nebesny, Bill Mishler and Escala collected two hits apiece in a losing cause. Mishler, who went 2 for 2 and a walk, scored two of the three runs.

The TOTS will run into some cold weather on Wednesday and the regularly scheduled game at Udall has been cancelled. The next TOTS' game is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m.

Gettings grabs first double-double in Arizona's win over WSU

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Stone Gettings grabbed his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Arizona to a 66-49 win over Washington State in Pullman tonight as the Wildcats improve to 15-6 and 5-3 in Pac-12 Conference play.

With the two road wins over the Washington schools this week, the Wildcats head back to the confines of McKale and take on USC on Thursday and UCLA next Saturday.

It was all Wildcats tonight from the opening tip as Arizona built a 32-23 lead at the half and led 53-33  at the 10-minute mark in the second half. The Wildcats had their way underneath the bucket with Gettings and Zeke Nnaji (10 points, 10 rebounds) controlling the inside game, while Nico Mannion was all over the court, contributing 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Way to go, Wildcats.
