A foggy morning at the ball field

TOTS Senior Baseball Network

60-and-over baseball

The members of the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) baseball club take the field in all kinds of weather.

Even fog.

Some say many of the members of the club are normally "in a fog" anyway when they take the field three days a week at Udall Park to play America's favorite pastime. But that is just a member joking with another. The fact the 60-somethings, 70-somethings and 80-somethings take the field at all is something short of remarkable.

Today the fog rolled in,  but the players grabbed their cleats and their gloves and found their way to their positions. Team White stayed in a fog for most the game as Team Blue prevailed, 15-2. Tim Tolson led the way for Team Blue with four hits and four RBI, while Team White managed a single run in the first inning and one more in the fifth.

The TOTS' maintenance guru, Chico Bigham, said he was somewhat surprised the game was played. "When I first got to the field this morning, the field was hard to spot." Fortunately, Bigham prepared the field anyway and the players trickled in. Fix the field and the TOTS will come, much like the phrase from the baseball flick, Field of Dreams: build it and they will come.

It's been a tough beginning of 2015 for the TOTS with a string of rain outs already in the books. Today the field at Udall wasn't under water, it was just hard to find.

Sunny days are ahead in Tucson with clear skies and the temperature in the low 70s as early as Friday.

Go get 'em, TOTS!
