The first Super Bowl
Super Bowl Sunday is just one day away.
Where and when was the first Super Bowl held?
The Green Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10, at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California on Jan. 15, 1967. Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns and was named the MVP, while Len Dawson threw a touchdown pass for Kansas City.

It's payback time
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
Arizona used another suffocating defense to dispose of the Oregon State Beavers at McKale Center tonight en route to a low-scoring 57-34 victory and win number 20 for the Wildcats.
It was payback time for the Wildcats, who lost earlier in the season to the Beavers in Corvallis.
The slow-down affair was a far cry from the 90-56 win over Oregon on Wednesday night at McKale. Arizona (20-2, 8-1 Pac-12) had six players score in double figures in the lopsided win over the Ducks, but tonight only Brandon Ashley and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson found the double-digit mark as Ashley scored 12 points, hitting 5 of 9 from the field, while Jefferson ended up with 11 points, hitting 3 of 7 shots and 5 of 5 from the free throw line.
Arizona, the sixth-ranked team in the country, picks up its 34th consecutive win at McKale and held the visiting Beavers to 28 percent from the field as Oregon State canned just 14 of 49 shot attempts. Oregon State made just 3 of 15 from three-point land -- a dismal 20 percent.
The Wildcats finished the night at 40 percent from the field, canning 20 of 49 attempts. Defensively, it was T.J. McConnell (seven points, four rebounds, six assists) leading the way with eight of Arizona's 12 steals. Stanley Johnson grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with eight points and two assists.
Way to go, Wildcats!

Wildcats roll by Ducks
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
The sixth-ranked Arizona Wildcats (19-2, 7-1 Pac-12) made it look easy at McKale Center tonight as six players scored in double figures en route to a 90-56 win over the Oregon Ducks.
Gabe York came off the bench to lead the Wildcats with 16 points, hitting 6 of 11 from the field and 3 of 6 from three-point land, while point guard T.J. McConnell ran the show once again, finishing with 10 points, five assists and a steal.
It didn't end there as 10 players scored in the game. Nine players put points on the board in the first half as the Wildcats left the floor at intermission with a 42-27 lead.
Brandon Ashley finished with 13 points, Stanley Johnson chipped in 12, while Kaleb Tarczewski and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson pumped in 11 points apiece. Dusan Ristic came off the bench and finished with nine points and five rebounds.
Arizona shot 59 percent from the field. A wild night at McKale to say the least.
Up next: Oregon State on Friday.

Arizona moves up to No. 6 in AP Poll
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
The Arizona Wildcats, 18-2 overall, improve to No. 6 in the latest AP College Basketball Poll.
Kentucky, Virginia, Gonzaga, Duke and Wisconsin remain ahead of the Wildcats.
The Kentucky Wildcats are both 19-0, while Gonzaga has one loss (who did they lose to?), while Duke is 17-2 and Wisconsin enters the week 18-2.
The answer: Gonzaga lost to Arizona. Go figure!

Defensive minded Wildcats improve to 18-2
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
A tough defense and a career night offensively by backup center Dusan Ristic helped seventh-ranked Arizona improve to 18-2 overall and 6-1 in Pac 12 play with a 73-50 win over California tonight at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, California.
Ristic answered the call after Kaleb Tarczewski was whistled for three fouls midway through the first half and the freshman quickly made the most of his minutes on the court with seven points -- including a three-pointer. Rustic finished the night with 12 points and two rebounds.
Arizona held a 29-19 lead at the half, thanks mainly to freshman Stanley Johnson who pumped in 11 points. Johnson finished with 18 points and nine rebounds on the night. Tarczewski flexed his muscles in the second half, finishing with 10 points and three rebounds.
The Arizona bench outscored the California bench 24-0.
The Wildcats return home and prepare for next week's Pac-12 action with Oregon on Wednesday and Oregon State on Friday. Both games slated for 8 p.m. at McKale Center.
Way to go, Wildcats. A sweep of the Bay Area.
Mr. Cub, gone!
Ernie Banks passed away this week at the age of 83.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977, Banks hit 512 home runs and is currently tied for 22nd with Eddie Mathews for career homers.
What a class act he was. Sometimes when we leave the dugout to play a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) game, I'll comment "let's play two" in honor of Mr. Banks.
Of course, the TOTS are lucky enough to complete a seven inning game these days, but there are a few members who would PLAY TWO if they had the chance.
Banks once said, "When I wake up in the morning, I feel like a billionaire without paying taxes."
Mr. Cub earned a salary of $65,000 in 1967.

Aces look to continue dominance in senior baseball league
Southwest Senior Baseball League
60-and-over
The Aces are an offshoot of the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS), the senior baseball organization which is in its 48th year at Udall Park. The roster of the Aces is comprised mostly of the "younger" TOTS and the competition through out the year is considered a step above from the weekly TOTS' games played every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Udall.
Somewhere between 15 and 20 games are played through out the year by the Aces as they lock horns with two South Tucson 60-and-over clubs, the Arizona Rattlers and the Old Pueblo Club. The Rattlers' home field is Mission Manor Park and the Old Pueblo Club makes its home at Santa Rita Park.
The Aces first game in 2015 is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 9 A.M. at Mission Manor against the Rattlers. The Aces closed out 2014 with three consecutive wins over the Rattlers, the latest win a 5-1 victory in mid-December.
The Southwest League has been around for six years and for the first four years it was the Old Pueblo Club and the Arizona Rattlers grabbing most of the wins. Not anymore. The last two years it's been the Aces with the upper hand.
The Aces will return to the Men's Senior Baseball League (MSBL) World Series in mid-October. The Aces have two years (2013, 2014) under their belt at the prestigious senior tournament.
The following is the active roster for the Aces.

Arizona trims Stanford 89-82
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
It wasn't pretty.
Fifty one fouls were called at Maples Pavilion tonight, but the Arizona Wildcats (17-2, 5-1) battled through it all and escaped town with an 89-82 win over the Stanford Cardinal.
Arizona was whistled for 23 fouls and Stanford, the home team, collected 28 fouls as the referees stopped play every chance they got and the result was a high-scoring affair as the Wildcats shot 55 percent from the field (30 of 54), while the Cardinal finished at 50 percent, canning 25 of 50 shots.
The Wildcats went to the foul line 36 times. They made 24. Stanford went to the charity line 31 times and made 24. Arizona went 5 for 12 from beyond the arc, while Stanford hit eight three-pointers in 20 attempts.
Five players finished in double figures for the Wildcats with Stanley Johnson leading the way with 19 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Ashley made the first six points of the game for Arizona and ended the night with 17 points and three rebounds. Gabe York chipped in 13 points, while Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added 12 points to go along with four rebounds and T.J. McConnell finished with 10 points.
Arizona trailed 41-39 at the half, but regained the lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game and never looked back. With the Wildcats in foul trouble, coach Sean Miller inserted seldom used Matt Korcheck in the lineup and the senior center responded with four points and two rebounds.
The seventh-ranked Wildcats kept pace with Utah for first place in the Pac-12 Conference. Both teams sit atop the standings at 5-1. Arizona finishes off the two-game road trip on Saturday at Berkeley against California, while Utah (15-3, 5-1) takes on Washington in Salt Lake City on Sunday.

Arizona Wildcats jump to No. 7 in AP Poll
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
The Arizona Wildcats jumped three spots to No. 7 in the latest AP Poll released today.
Kentucky, Virginia and Gonzaga are 1-2-3, while Villanova, Duke and Wisconsin are 4-5-6, while Notre Dame rounds out the top 10 at No. 8, Iowa State at No. 9 and Louisville lands in the 10th spot.
Utah, after losing last Saturday to Arizona at McKale, falls to No. 12 and is the only other Pac-12 team ranked in the top 25.
Arizona travels to Stanford on Thursday to take on the Cardinal and close out the week on Saturday against the California Golden Bears.

Seattle, New England advance to Super Bowl
2015 Super Bowl -- Super Bowl XLIX
It'll be Seattle and New England in the Super Bowl
Russell Wilson vs. Tom Brady
The Seahawks had a scare today in Seattle but edged Green Bay 28-22 in overtime in the NFC Championship Game and it was all New England today in Foxboro as the Patriots crushed Indianapolis 45-7 in the AFC Championship Game.
Down 19-7 with the clock ticking away in the fourth quarter, Wilson and the Seahawks stun the Packers by scoring two touchdowns and converting a two-point conversion in the final 2:09 of regulation to take a 22-19 lead, only to see Mason Crosby tie the game with 14 seconds remaining with a 48-yard field goal -- his fifth of the game.
The Seahawks won the toss and elected to receive the kickoff in overtime. Three minutes and 41 seconds later, Wilson hit Jermaine Kersey on a 35-yard TD for the win as the defending Super Bowl champs head for Glendale, Arizona and a Feb. 1 meeting with New England in the 2015 Super Bowl, also known as Super Bowl XLIX, or in simpler terms the 49th Super Bowl.
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers finished the night with 178 passing yards, completing 19 of 34 passes and two interceptions, while Wilson completed 14 of 29 passes for 209 yards and the winning score. Wilson also scored on a 1-yard plunge and also connected with Luke Wilson on a two-point conversion. He was intercepted four times, allowing the Packers to hang on to the lead for most of the game.
As for New England, it was Brady in command as he threw three touchdowns passes and handed the ball to running back LeGarrette Blount, who rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns.
The Patroits led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, led 17-7 at the half and poured it on in the third quarter with three scores -- touchdown passes to Nate Solder for 16 yards and to Rob Gronkowski for five yards, while Blount finished off the quarter with a 13-yard run.
Indy quarterback Andrew Luck couldn't get anything going, completing 12 of 33 passes for 126 yards and no touchdowns. Luck was intercepted twice and the Colts failed to get a running game going as they finished with just 83 rushing yards.
Seattle and New England head to the Valley of the Sun. It should be a dandy!

Wildcats devour 8th-ranked Utes
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
T.J. McConnell ignited Arizona with 16 points and six assists, while Stanley Johnson poured in 18 points in the second half as the tenth-ranked Wildcats crushed eighth-ranked Utah 69-51 at McKale Center tonight.
Arizona out rebounded Utah 40-19 and dominated at both ends of the court for 33 of the 40 minutes as the Wildcats improve to 16 -2 overall and 4-1 in the Pac 12. Brandon Ashley added 14 points, hitting six of nine from the field, while grabbing eight boards. Johnson had a game-high nine rebounds and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson grabbed seven boards, while holding Utah senior Delon Wright to just 10 points.
The Wildcats held the Utes to 39 percent shooting, while Arizona finished at 49 percent, hitting 26 of 53 from the field. Utah canned nine three-pointers in 19 attempts, while the Wildcats made just one three-point shot in seven attempts.
Way to go, Wildcats!
Note: 32 straight wins at home for the Wildcats!

Sluggish Wildcats roll over Buffs
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
The 10-ranked Arizona Wildcats are not playing like a top-10 team.
With color-commentator Bill Walton on the sideline at McKale Center talking about the birds and the bees of Tucson, Arizona played sluggish for the most part of the 40 minutes en route to a 68-54 Pac-12 win over Colorado.
The Buffs, playing with out two starters, stayed close until the final five minutes, thanks mainly to the 30 points thrown in by Askia Booker. Arizona countered with 22 points and eight rebounds from Stanley Johnson, while Kaleb Tarczewski added 14 points and Elliott Pitts hit four three-pointers off the bench for 12 points.
The above is the good news. Some of the bad news: Tarczewski managed just two rebounds -- both in the second half. That's two rebounds in two games. Brandon Ashley was 3 of 9 from the field for seven points, but to his credit he led the way with a game-high 11 rebounds. Arizona shoots 41 percent from the field (23 of 55), while Colorado, once again thanks to Booker, finishes at a shade under 43 percent (21 of 49). Booker was 11 of 17 before leaving the game with an ankle injury with five minutes remaining in the game.
Arizona improves to 15-2 and 3-1 in Pac-12 play.
Utah awaits!

A foggy morning at the ball field
TOTS Senior Baseball Network
60-and-over baseball
The members of the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) baseball club take the field in all kinds of weather.
Even fog.
Some say many of the members of the club are normally "in a fog" anyway when they take the field three days a week at Udall Park to play America's favorite pastime. But that is just a member joking with another. The fact the 60-somethings, 70-somethings and 80-somethings take the field at all is something short of remarkable.
Today the fog rolled in, but the players grabbed their cleats and their gloves and found their way to their positions. Team White stayed in a fog for most the game as Team Blue prevailed, 15-2. Tim Tolson led the way for Team Blue with four hits and four RBI, while Team White managed a single run in the first inning and one more in the fifth.
The TOTS' maintenance guru, Chico Bigham, said he was somewhat surprised the game was played. "When I first got to the field this morning, the field was hard to spot." Fortunately, Bigham prepared the field anyway and the players trickled in. Fix the field and the TOTS will come, much like the phrase from the baseball flick, Field of Dreams: build it and they will come.
It's been a tough beginning of 2015 for the TOTS with a string of rain outs already in the books. Today the field at Udall wasn't under water, it was just hard to find.
Sunny days are ahead in Tucson with clear skies and the temperature in the low 70s as early as Friday.
Go get 'em, TOTS!

Ohio State pummels Oregon
National Championship
Ezekiel Elliott, only a sophomore, rushes for 246 yards and scores four touchdowns as fourth-ranked Ohio State pummels second-ranked Oregon 42-20 tonight in Arlington, Texas to win the National Championship in college football.
Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, in a losing cause, throws for 333 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 39 yards.
Ohio State ends up 14-1 and takes home the championship hardware, while Oregon finishes 13-2 -- losing to the Buckeyes and to Arizona, 31-24, during the regular season.
Arizona remains in top-10 in AP Poll
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
Despite a two-point loss in Corvallis, the 10th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (14-2) remain in the top ten in the latest AP Poll. Utah is No. 8, setting up a top-10 matchup this Saturday against the Utes (13-2) at McKale Center.
But, first things first. Arizona will host Colorado on Thursday, while Utah tangles with Arizona State in Tempe.
Wildcat note: Streak continues. Arizona now at 30 weeks in the top ten!

Nailbiter in Corvallis
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
On a night when second-ranked Duke and fourth-ranked Wisconsin fall, it figures the seventh-ranked Arizona Wildcats would find themselves in a nailbiter in Corvallis, Oregon.
Arizona (14-2 overall, 2-1 in Pac 12) loses for the second time this year, falling to the Oregon State Beavers, 58-56. The Beavers shoot 51 percent from the field, while the Wildcats struggle for 40 minutes, hitting just 17 of 45 shots for 37 percent in a low-scoring affair.
And yes, the Oregon State fans stormed the court as the buzzer sounded. An all too familiar scene.
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson led the Wildcats with 14 points, while T.J. McConnell chipped in 13.
Indianapolis stuns Denver
NFL Playoffs
Three of the home teams prevailed in the NFL divisional playoffs this weekend.
As I expected, New England trims Baltimore 35-31, Seattle manhandles Carolina 31-17 and Green Bay edges Dallas 26-21, but Peyton Manning and the Broncos are turned away as Indianapolis stuns Denver, 24-13. The four winners received outstanding play from their respective quarterbacks:
-- New England's Tom Brady (33 for 50, 367 yards and three touchdowns)
-- Seattle's Russell Wilson (15 for 22, 268 yards and three touchdowns)
-- Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers (24 for 35, 316 yards and three touchdowns)
-- Indy's Andrew Luck (27 of 43, 265 yards and two touchdowns)
Indianapolis travels to New England next Sunday for the AFC title game, while Green Bay will be at Seattle for the NFC championship. Once again, I expect the home teams to come out on top, but both games may go to the wire. It's hard to bet against an Aaron Rodgers or an Andrew Luck, but it's doubly tough going up against Tom Brady and New England at home or Russell Wilson and the Seahawks at home.
All four teams are worthy. Look at the roadkill already -- the Ravens, the Panthers, the Cowboys and the Broncos and some pretty good QBs -- Joe Flacco, Cam Newton, Tony Romo and Peyton Manning -- are on the outside looking in.
My bet is Seattle and New England in the Super Bowl with the Seahawks winning it all.

McConnell finds the mark in Eugene
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
Arizona's point guard T.J. McConnell found the mark in Eugene tonight, tossing in 21 points to lead the Wildcats to an 80-62 win over the Oregon Ducks. McConnell, known more for his pinpoint assists, canned nine of 14 shots, while grabbing five rebounds to go along with three assists.
The seventh-ranked Wildcats improved to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-12 standings.
Arizona led 39-34 at the half and held double-digit leads in the second half as five players scored in double figures -- including a double double by Kaleb Tarczewski (11 points and 10 rebounds). Stanley Johnson contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had a big night with 13 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Ashley finished with 10 points and Gabe York added seven points.
Arizona shot 48 percent from the field, while holding the Ducks to 35 percent. The Wildcats out rebounded Oregon, 40-27.
All in all, a great road win for the Wildcats. Next stop: Oregon State on Sunday in Corvallis.

Arizona ranked 7th in AP Poll
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
The University of Arizona basketball team moves up one notch in the Associated Press College Basketball Poll, which was released earlier today. The Wildcats (13-1) are No. 7, while Utah (12-2) is ranked No. 9 in the nation.
Kentucky, Duke and Virginia -- all at 13-0 -- are ranked 1-2-3, while Wisconsin, Louisville and Gonzaga are 4-5-6. Villanova sits at No. 8 and Texas grabs the 10th spot.
TOTS' hitting records shattered in 2014
TOTS Senior Baseball Network
60-and-over baseball
The "young men" of the Tucson Old Timers baseball club shattered a hand full of batting records in 2014. Pete Peters, 65, Lloyd Barzell, 64, and 62-year old Tim Tolson broke individual season records in hits and RBIs -- all of which were established way back in 2005 and 2006.
Tim Tolson, who played in just 82 games in 2014, established a new record for RBI in a season with 175. The young power hitter collected 177 hits in just 274 at bats, while he scored 128 runs, drilled 56 doubles and led the club in home runs with 12. Tolson's .646 batting average for the year was the best on the ball club.
But it was Peters and Barzell who made the most "noise" in 2014 as they both broke the individual season hits record of 228, established in 2005 by Chico Bigham, who is now a young 76-year-old. Peters played in 121 games (the most by a TOT) and collected 241 hits in 414 at bats for a healthy batting average for the year of .582. Barzell, on the other hand, played in 116 games and hit safely 239 times in 421 at bats, which calculates out to .568 average.
The two players spent a lot of time on the bases. Barzell led the club in runs scored with 194 (a new club record as well), while Peters crossed the plate 167 times (third on the club in that category). Another "young man" -- 63-year-old Brian Reilly snuck in for second in the club in runs scored with 168.
Four players drove in 100 runs or more for the season. Tolson, of course, led the way with 175, followed by Peters (113), Bigham (110) and Pigpen Price (100).
In the 80-and-over group, it was 89-year-old Floyd Lance leading the way. Lance, the oldest member of the TOTS, played in 111 games and batted a respectable .332. He collected 103 hits in just 310 at bats. He also walked 57 times, led the club in sacrifices with 10 and drove in 71 runs.
It was a record-shattering year in 2014 for the TOTS. Forty-nine members stepped to plate in 2014 -- the 47th year for the organization.
The following is the batting statistics for all 49 players (Games played, AB, R, H, RBIs and season-ending batting averages, in that order):

Wildcats impressive in Pac-12 opener
Arizona Wildcats Basketball
The Arizona Wildcats did everything right at McKale Center tonight in their Pac-12 opener against their intrastate rival Arizona State. The Wildcats shot 51 percent from the field, canned 5 of 10 from three-point land and made their free throws (16 of 19) en route to a 73-49 win over the Sun Devils.
Arizona, ranked No. 8 in the country, improves to 13-1 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-12 Conference.
Arizona coach Sean Miller changed the starting lineup tonight, inserting Elliott Pitts and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson in place of Gabe York and Stanley Johnson. By the end of the game, ten players had played and scored for the Wildcats with Brandon Ashley, Jefferson and Johnson leading the way with 13 points apiece. Jefferson hauled in eight rebounds to lead the Wildcats, while Johnson had no trouble coming off the bench, adding seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The Sun Devils were limited to 32 percent from the field and 29 percent from three-point land. Arizona out rebounded ASU, 33-23.
Up next: A trip to the Oregon schools next week.

As expected it'll be the Baltimore Ravens at New England, Indianapolis at Denver, Carolina at Seattle and Dallas at Green Bay in the divisional round games next week.
The results of the wild card games this weekend offered no surprises as Baltimore upended Pittsburgh, Dallas edged Detroit, Indianapolis rolled over Cincinnati and Carolina, at home, took down the Arizona Cardinals.
Odds are the home teams will prevail next week. Look for New England to survive a close battle with the Ravens and Green Bay will get by Tony Romo and the Cowboys. Peyton Manning and the Broncos will have their way with Andrew Luck and the Colts, while Seattle will overwhelm Carolina.
Hard to believe, but the Super Bowl is just around the corner.

Pac-12 shines with 6-2 mark in bowl games
The best conference in college football for 2014 is the Pac-12.
Eight teams competed in the postseason bowl games -- six victories and two losses, leaving no question as to which conference is the "top gun" for the year. And it is not over yet, as the best team in the conference and the second-ranked team in the country, the Oregon Ducks, battle for the championship on Jan. 12 against fourth-ranked Ohio State in Arlington, Texas.
UCLA outlasted Kansas State 40-35 last night at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, while Washington lost 30-22 at the Cactus Bowl, up the road in Tempe. Just two eight-point losses for the conference, one by Arizona (38-30 to Boise State at the Fiesta Bowl) and the Huskies' disappointing loss late last night.
Hats off to the teams in the conference for a job well done.

Ohio State knocks off top-ranked Alabama
College Football Playoffs
Ohio State (13-1) knocks off top-ranked Alabama 42-35 tonight at the Sugar Bowl to set up a meeting with second-ranked Oregon on Jan. 12 for the National Collegiate Football Championship in Arlington, Texas.
The fourth-ranked Buckeyes fought off the Crimson Tide (12-2) late in the fourth quarter and with less than two minutes left covered an onside kick, after Alabama had scored to pull within seven points.
It still wasn't over as Alabama got the ball back one more time and started a drive from their own 22- yard line with less than 90 seconds remaining in regulation. The Buckeyes ended Alabama's hope for a national title with an interception in the end zone as time expired.
Oregon shines at Rose Bowl; Pac 12 Conference 5-1 in bowl games
College Football Playoffs
Despite Arizona's 38-30 loss to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl, the Pac-12 is now a collective 5-1 in the college bowl games. Today, the second-ranked Oregon Ducks trounced No. 3 Florida State 59-20 at the Rose Bowl and grabbed their spot in the national championship game set for Jan. 12 in Arlington, Texas.
It'll be the Ducks against the winner of tonight's Sugar Bowl, either the top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide or the fourth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.
Oregon (13-1) is my choice to win it all. The Ducks will win the title and finish a remarkable season with just one loss. And, what was the name of the team that beat them? The Arizona Wildcats!
