Kevin Towers gone

Arizona Diamondbacks

Kevin Towers is gone.

What position did he play again?

Probably the first of many moves Tony La Russa and the Diamondbacks will have to  make in the days ahead. Arizona has a long way to go to get back to the top of the pack in the National League  West. It's been 13 years since the Diamondbacks walked away with a World Series title.

What a long road ahead for the Diamondbacks.

Towers made a few good trades (I'm trying to remember them) and plenty of bad ones. At this point, the Diamondbacks will be trading away farm team players for more farm team players. Their current lineup, which I have to admit has given some young players their chance to perform on the big stage is a tribute to the organization's farm system. And the players currently on the field have certainly battled through the final third of the 2014 season.

It should be an interesting spring in 2015. Is Aaron Hill moving to third base? Will the D'backs pick up a veteran starter? Is Tuffy the new catcher in town? Plenty of questions! La Russa may be high tailing it for St. Louis before this is all over.

The Diamondbacks lose 2-1 to the LA Dodgers last night as Matt Kemp is the latest bad guy as he belts a solo home run in the third inning -- his 18th homer of the year.

Arizona falls to 59-82 and no chance for a .500 season -- not that anyone was expected them to do so. But mathematically, they can't finish 81-81, something they have accomplished the last two season. The only question left: Can they stay away from the dreaded 100-loss season?
