Mathews edges all TOTS hitters in September with 18 hits

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

John Mathews carried a big stick to the plate during September. He led all TOTS hitters with 18 hits, finishing with a hefty .818 batting average while playing in nine of the 12 games as the amateur senior baseball club completed its final month at Palo Verde Park.

Mathews ended the month 18 for 22, edging Randy Livingston (17 for 27, a .630 average) and John Cooke (17 for 32, a .531 clip), while Ernesto Escala ended up fourth on the list going 16 for 29 and a .552 batting average.

Jon Beady led the club in RBI with 16, including three doubles, two triples, and one home run at the spacious Palo Verde Park. The TOTS are back at Udall Park as the renovations are finally complete, allowing the old-timers to return to more familiar grounds where fences are within striking distance at 300 feet.

The TOTS banged out 226 hits in September for a club batting average of .384.

On the mound, Bob Daliege finished with a perfect 3-0 record. Glen Vann (1 win,1 save) pitched the most innings with 21 and recorded the most strikeouts with 12, while Joe Opocensky, Mike Dawson, and Beady tied for second in wins with two apiece.

Pigpen Price and Daliege led the super seniors (75-and-over) group. Price went 8 for 21 (.381), while Daliege finished 8 for 20 and a .400 average.

The TOTS are glad to be back home at Udall. Now, if the cooler temps would return!
