Arizona football just five days away
Arizona Wildcats Football
The clock is ticking. We're just five days away from the kickoff to the 2014 University of Arizona football season. Hard to believe a new season is upon us.
Depending on which media outlet you subscribe to the Wildcats are looking at a 6-6, 7-5, 8-4 or a 9-3 season. Nine wins and three losses may be stretching it a bit, but I'm a die-hard Arizona fan and let's go for it. Nine wins, okay. Rose Bowl? Probably not. But, as I say, I'm a die-hard fan, so until I see on paper that the Wildcats are heading for someplace other than the Big Daddy of Them All, I'll continue to smell the roses for a while.
We have a number of quarterbacks this season. The big question: Will another B.J. Denker emerge from the huddle or will it be a week-to-week decision by Coach Rich Rodriquez to pencil in the Wildcats' signal-caller?
Showing my age, quarterbacks aren't referred to as signal-caller's in this day in age. But, it's obvious the new Arizona quarterback will need to run like a Denker and pass like a Nick Foles.
Speaking of Mr. Foles, isn't he the starter in Philadelphia and the two backups for the Eagles are former Pac-12 QBs -- Mark Sanchez (Pac 10 for Mr. Sanchez, of course) and Matt Barkley?
Come Friday night it'll be UNLV in town and the Wildcats should come out the victors. Whether it is anywhere close to a 58-13 riot like it was last year in Las Vegas, remains to be seen. Then, it is on to the University Texas-San Antonio on Sept. 4 and back home on Sept. 13 to take on Nevada.
Should be 3-0 at that point.
Then it gets a bit tougher with nine Pac-12 games in eleven weeks. The two open dates are on Sept. 27 and Oct. 18. By the time Nov. 28 rolls around, we'll know if the final regular season game against the hated Sun Devils from Arizona State will mean anything. Of course, if you're a die-hard Arizona fan like I am, then of course it means something...it means EVERYTHING!
And as an added bonus, we get the Sun Devils AT HOME! Win all of our home games, steal a couple on the road and PRESTO we have nine wins.
What we don't know is how the old "injury bug" will decide to show itself. Come on Wildcats, stay healthy please! Oh, yes. I can hear the fans at Arizona Stadium. That slow building roar just before the opening kick soars down the field. Now, if we could just get some coolness in the AIR!
Good luck, Wildcats. Have a great season.
