290-year-old infield can't stop TOTS Blue

TOTS Senior Baseball Network

60-and-over Circuit

Team Blue hurlers, lefty Ron Petersen and right-hander Chico Bigham, combined their efforts to get by Team White 11-6 today in a Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) baseball game at Udall Park.

Petersen, 69, started the game and gave way to Bigham, 74, in the fifth inning, while 84-year-old Billy Heiny went the distance for Team White and absorbed the loss.

Team White kept the game close thanks to their 290-year-old infield, made up of 88-year-old first baseman Floyd Lance, second baseman Doc Thompson, who turns 72 in August, third baseman Pigpen Price, 69, and the young man of the group, 61-year-old Thunder Tim Tolson.

Team Blue led 6-5 after four innings and increased their lead with a five-run fifth, thanks to timely  hitting from Mike Steele, Dan Lundwall, Petersen and Bigham. Team White tried to rally in their final at bat -- thanks to a fielding error and back-to-back singles from Mike Taylor and Price. But with the bases full and no outs, Bigham coaxed the next three batters to hit weak fly balls to Team Blue's infielders.

The TOTS will complete their week of action with single games on Wednesday and Friday. Both games will get underway at 9 A.M.
