Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)
60-and-over baseball
Team White's Brackston Whitaker, 73, ripped an RBI-single off the glove of Team Blue's shortstop Mike Dawson with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 7-6 walk-off win today at Udall Park in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.
Team Blue had a chance to break the 6-6 tie in the top of the seventh inning, but two outstanding defensive plays -- one by Pete Peters, who snared a line drive for the first out at third base, and the play of the day that followed when centerfielder Reed Palmer unleashed a throw from the outfield to first baseman David Byars for an 8-3 putout. Bob Daliege, who went the distance for Team White, coaxed the next batter to ground into a force play for the final out in the top the seventh.
Joe Opocensky, who went the distance for Team Blue, needed three outs to the keep the game at 6-6, but Byars reached on an error, Peters singled to center and Rob Morse bunted his way on. The bunt dribbled in front of the plate and the throw to third was late, loading the bases.
Whitaker then stepped in and provided the walk-off win as Byars scampered home from third with the winning run.
Opocensky led all hitters with a 4 for 5 day, while Team Blue's lead-off hitter Ken Nebesny went 3 for 4. Thunder Tim Tolson went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs for Team White, while Sam Dean knocked in two of Team Blue's six runs.
The TOTS return to action on Wednesday at Udall. Game time: 9 a.m.
