Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)
60-and-over baseball
The 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers had their hitting shoes on at Udall Park this morning.
Team White wins the game 8-3 as the hard-throwing Reed Palmer survived a 15-hit attack by Team Blue, while his team strung together 14 hits -- including three hits by Palmer, three by Doc Thompson and three more key singles from Big John Mathews. Thunder Tim Tolson chipped in two hits, while Pete da Bronx Maldonado, Pistol Pete Peters and smilin' Bobby Long added a hit apiece to round out the 14-hit attack.
Not to be outdone at the plate, Team Blue, despite a 5-run loss, received a great hitting day from Joltin' Joe Opocensky, who went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Leadoff hitter Ken "the Chemist" Nebesny mixed in two hits in three at bats, while Mike Dawson, Rob Morse and newcomer Ed Houser added two hits apiece as well. Bobby Daliege, David Byars, Ernesto Escala and newcomer John Jarboe chipped in singles to round out Team Blue's 15-hit attack.
Team White owned a 5-0 lead after four innings of play, but Team Blue picked up a run in the top of the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Team White added three insurance runs, thanks to an opposite field single from Tolson and hits from Mathews, Palmer and Long.
Daliege started on the mound for Team Blue and allowed two runs in his three innings of work, while Escala came on in relief and pitched the fourth, fifth and the sixth.
The TOTS will take a well-deserved weekend off and return to Udall on Monday. Game time: 9 a.m.
