Wildcats improve to 12-0

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Freshman Stanley Johnson scored 17 points and veteran T.J. McConnell scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out eight assists as the third-ranked Arizona Wildcats fought off a stubborn UTEP team in El Paso tonight and left town with a hard-earned 60-55 win.

Arizona becomes the first team in college basketball to reach 12 wins and improves to a perfect 12-0.

But it wasn't easy.

Arizona missed 12 free throws -- canning 15 of 27 and shot 45 percent from the field -- hitting 20 of 44 field goals. UTEP shot 40 percent (22 of 54) from the field.

Gabe York and Brandon Ashley scored in double figures for the Wildcats -- York with 13 and Ashley with 10. It was an off-night for Kaleb Tarczewski, who scored five points and fouled out late in the second half and for Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who finished with six points.

The two teams tied in rebounds with 34 apiece. Arizona turned the ball over 17 times, while the Miners were guilty of 18 turnovers.

Up next: UNLV in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
