Wildcats struggle in home opener...lose to Bulldogs, 39-17

Arizona Wildcats Football

Mississippi State 39 Arizona 17

Mississippi State waited for Arizona to pull off the upset.

An 11-point underdog at kickoff, the Wildcats somehow, despite a lack of a fluid offense, found themselves within striking distance Saturday night after three quarters of play and needed only a TD and a two-point conversion to draw even.

The 46,000 in attendance, most of them loud and rowdy Wildcat fans, waited patiently for the hometown team to turn the tide, erase a 25-17 deficit and, by the stroke of midnight, walk out of Arizona Stadium with a 2-0 record and a crazy thought of a 3-0 start to the season with a victory at home next Saturday over North Dakota State.

Not in the cards for the Wildcats (1-1) as quarterback Will Rogers threw two TD passes in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs (2-0) left town with a 39-17 win. Rogers finished with 313 yards and four touchdowns.

As for Arizona's quarterback, Jayden de Lara, some poor decision making mixed in with a handful of dropped passes by his receivers led to a frustrating night with three interceptions, just one TD through the air and 220 passing yards.

Bottom line: Mississippi State  heads for LSU next Saturday and the Wildcats face the Bison (2-0), a 43-3 winner in Fargo on Saturday over North Carolina A&T (0-2).

The season continues...
