Beebe, Tolson finish atop the TOTS' batting charts for October

As usual, Thunder Tim Tolson led the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers during the month of October with 26 hits in 40 appearances at the plate for a .650 batting average, the big shocker was the man who finished second this month, the "Tombstone Kid" Roger Beebe.

Beebe, arguably had his best month with the TOTS with 22 hits in 41 at bats and a .537 average. Roger also scored 11 runs during the month, second only to Dennis Crowley (13).

Other top hitters for the month included Doc Thompson, who batted a hefty .720 with 18 hits in 25  trips to the plate, while Joe Opocensky went 14 for 18, another hefty average of .778. Big John Mathews also had a good month with 13 hits in 20 trips and a .650 average.

Twelve players divided their month between playing for the TOTS and participating in the 32nd annual Men's Senior Baseball League World Series in Phoenix. The dozen players used the TOTS' games as a final tuneup before they journeyed to Phoenix to play a week, or two, in the prestigious tournament, which included 3,000 players and 330 teams from all over the country, including Canada and the Virgin Islands.

Tolson, Opocensky, Mathews used their TOTS' at bats to get them ready for the MSBL World Series as did Peter Peters (5 for 15 in five games), Mike Dawson ( 17 for 30  in 10 games), Ernie Escala (2 for 3, one game), Pigpen Price (9 for 17 in five games), Bill Mishler (5 for 10 in four games), Bob Daliege (7 for 22 in six games), Lloyd Barzell (15 for 30 in eight games), Arnie White (8 for 23 in six games) and Danny Boxberger (11 for 23 in six games). Escala, Dawson and Opocensky also logged some innings during the month to prepare for the senior tournament, Escala pitched in one game, Daliege went 2-1, Dawson went 1-1-2 and Opocensky won all three of his starts with the TOTS.

As for the all important RBI category, Tolson banged home 19 runs, Opocensky was second with 13, Thompson had 12, while Jesse Ochoa and Mathews knocked in 10 runs apiece.

Other top hitters for October included Reed Palmer (8 for 16, a .500 average), Ron Ryan (14 for 27, a .519 average) and Ron Carlson (8 for 14, a .571 average).

The oldest player to get a hit in October was 94-year-old Floyd Lance (1 for 12 in 4 games) and the youngest player, 61-year-old newcomer Steve Foster (4 for 13 in 4 games).

The TOTS have two more months left in its 51st season and will continue with three ball games a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) at Udall Park. Game times this time of year: 10 a.m.
