Byars on fire this week in TOTS' games

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

"It's scary," David Byars said, after today's 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game at Udall Park.

Byars is discussing his current hitting streak, a modest 7 for 7 in two games this week-- including 4 for 4 today. Byars was happy just joining in on the hit parade. The top three players in the lineup for Team Blue -- lefty Dennis Crowley, Byars and Bob Daliege -- collected a combined 12 hits and scored 11 runs.

Even clean-up hitter Tim Tolson added a couple of dingers and scored a run as the four players for Team Blue ended up crossing the plate 12 times en route to a 12-9 win over Team White. Joe Opocensky added three hits for the winners and knocked in a team-high five runs.

Daliege went the distance and picked up the pitching victory. It got a little scary in the bottom of the seventh when Team White plated two runs, but three ground outs -- one to Tolson at short, one to  Pigpen Price at second and the final out of the game, a putout at first base by Byars.

Jesse Ochoa was the big gun for Team White. Ochoa was a perfect 4 for 4 and drove in a team-high five runs. Reed Palmer started on the mound for Team White and was saddled with the loss.

The oldest player on the field today was 94-year-old Floyd Lance and the youngest player was Ron Ryan, 61, who had a couple of hits today -- including a booming double down the first base line.

The TOTS close out the week with a game on Friday at Udall. Game time: 10 a.m.
