Reilly has a good day at Udall

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Brian Reilly had a good day at Udall Park this morning.

Reilly led Team Blue to a lopsided 18-0 win today over Team White with four hits in four trips to the plate to go along with four RBI and four runs scored. He batted second in Team Blue's lineup and was a thorn in the side of Team White's starting pitcher Arnie White all day.

As for Team White, they just couldn't get into the flow of things and the final game of the month for the TOTS turned in to a blow out.

Reilly wore a bright orange jersey today and he may want to throw it into the washing machine and have it ready for Wednesday when the TOTS get together for their first game of February. The jersey may turn out to be a good luck charm. Reilly's jersey sure stood out today, just like his hitting!

7th-ranked Wildcats improve to 20-2

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The 7th-ranked Arizona Wildcats improve to 20-2 and a perfect 9-0 in the Pac-12 Conference standings with a 77-66 win over Washington today at the McKale Center.

Five players scored in double figures for the Wildcats with Kadeem Allen leading the way with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Kobi Simmons finished with 13 points. Allonzo Trier, Lauri Markkanen and Dusan Ristic scored 12 points apiece. Trier led the Wildcats in rebounds with eight.

Arizona was sluggish from the beginning. Down by as many as nine points, the Wildcats battled their way back and trailed the Huskies at the half, 33-31. The Wildcats won the game at the free throw line, knocking down 22 of 30 attempts, while the Huskies made just 7 of 17 from the charity stripe.

With many of the top teams in the country losing this week, the Wildcats outscored the Huskies 46-33 in the second half to grab their 14th win in row and maintain a one-game lead in the Pac-12 over the Oregon Ducks.

Way to go, Wildcats!

Wildcats dump Cougars, 79-62

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Allonzo Trier scored 17 points and dished out seven assists, while Lauri Markkanen picked up another double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds as 7th-ranked Arizona knocks off Washington State 79-62 tonight at McKale Center.

Arizona improves to 19-2 and 8-0 in the Pac-12 Conference. It was the Wildcats 13th win in a row and a victory on Sunday over Washington will probably push Arizona further up the national rankings as Villanova, Kansas, Kentucky and Florida State, all teams ahead of the Wildcats last week in the polls,  have all lost this week.

The Wildcats toyed with the Cougars tonight and the game was close until late in the second half. Arizona led 56-53 with 8:45 left in the game, but outscored the Cougars 23-9 down the stretch.

Dusan Ristic chipped in 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Rawle Alkins also finished in double figures with 12.

Way to go, Wildcats!

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

He's back!

Finally, Allonzo Trier is back on the court.

But, guess what?

He just joined in the fun as six Wildcats hit in double figures with Kobi Simmons leading the way with 20 points in a 96-85 romp over the third-ranked UCLA Bruins today at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

As for Trier, he scored 12 points, grabbed sevens rebounds and dished out four assists, while Lauri Markkanen finished with 18 points and matched Trier in rebounds with seven. It didn't end there as Dusan Ristic pumped in 11 points, Rawle Alkins netted 10 points, Chance Comanche chipped in 10 and Kadeem Allen added nine points.

Arizona rotated nine players and coach Sean Miller was able to rest players through out the game. Parker Jackson-Cartwright made the most of his 18 minutes on the court with six points, two rebounds and four assists. Eight players played at least 17 minutes with Keanu Pinder playing the least amount with four minutes.

Miller did his job from the sideline and the Wildcats, at full strength for the first time all year, did their job on the court.

Arizona shoots 50 percent from the floor (34 of 68 field goals) and hits nine of 20 three-pointers (45 percent). The Wildcats make 19 of 21 from the free throw line and out rebounded the Bruins, 42-33.

Arizona improves to 18-2 overall and 7-0 in the Pac-12. They have now won 12 games in a row.

Way to go, Wildcats!

Markkanen leads Wildcats to win over USC

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The 14th-ranked Arizona Wildcats rolled early, sputtered down the stretch, but held on for a 73-66 win over USC tonight at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. The Wildcats led 29-19 at the end of the first half and led by as much as 23 points early in the second half.

Then the Trojans found their groove. Down 56-35 with 9:20 remaining, USC started drilling 3-pointers and with 1:03 left in the game had pulled within three points, at 67-64.

Markkanen banked in a long 3-pointer with 33 seconds left to give the Wildcats enough breathing room to hold off the Trojans. Markkanen finished the night with 23 points -- including 5 of 6 from three-point land. Rawle Alkins finished with 14 points, Kadeem Allen chipped in 11 and Kobi Simmons ended up with 10 points. Dusan Ristic added seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Arizona improves to 17-2 and 6-0 in the Pac-12 Conference. The Wildcats have won 11 games in a row.

Next up: UCLA on Saturday.

Patriots to host Steelers; Falcons host Green Bay

NFL Playoffs

A wild weekend in the NFL.

On Saturday, New England beat Houston (34-16) and Atlanta rolled by Seattle (36-20). Tonight, two games go down to the wire as Green Bay edges Dallas (34-31) and Pittsburgh holds off Kansas City (18-16).

That leaves Tom Brady and the Patriots at home next Sunday to face Big Ben Roehlisberger and the Steelers in the AFC Championship game, while Matt Ryan and the Falcons host Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game.

Four great teams. Four great quarterbacks.

Here comes the Judge

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Chuck Sabalos, 66, a retired Pima County Superior Court Judge and a member of the Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) since 2010, is currently swinging a hot bat at Udall Park.

Sabalos, a catcher who once caught former major leaguer Pat Darcy during his "high school days" at Tucson Rincon High School,  is having his best January ever with the TOTS.

The jury is out on how the rest of the month will pan out, but for now, in two games, Sabalos is 5 for 6 with six RBI -- including a 3 for 3 day this morning at Udall Park as he led Team White to 7-1 win over Team Blue.

"Maybe I should quit now while I'm ahead," Sabalos said. "That's the best two games I have put together since I've been with the TOTS."

Chuck, who is still recovering from a serious foot injury, played in just 13 games in 2015 and 11 games in 2016 and had a combined total of 14 hits. He's almost half way to that total after two games this month.

The TOTS are happy to have The Judge back. The organization can always use catchers. There's not many 60-and-over catchers around.

As for today's game, the winning pitcher was Arnie White, who pitched seven strong innings for Team White and picked up the win. Bob Daliege pitched for Team Blue and was saddled with the loss.

"We just didn't hit the ball very well today," said Daliege.

In fact, the only run scored off of White came in the sixth inning when Pigpen Price hit a slow roller to short and the throw to first was in the dirt and the runner scored from third.

"That's the best I've thrown in a while," said White, who spends a good portion of the winter in Tucson and the rest of the year at his ranch in Montana.

The TOTS hope to get all three games in next week at Udall, weather permitting. A front is moving in  over the weekend and could cause havoc with the field. The TOTS have had a lot of rainouts the past couple of months.

The old-timers don't like the rain. They'd rather play baseball.

As for The Judge, the TOTS are glad to have another catcher in their midst. And the fact Sabalos has put down his gavel and is now swinging a hot bat, is a plus.

Way to go, CHUCKIE!

Markkanen scores a career-high 30 in Arizona win over ASU

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Freshman Lauri Markkanen scores a career-high 30 points and the Arizona Wildcats knock off Arizona State 91-75 tonight at Mckale Center.  Markkanen connected on 12 of 18 field goals -- including 4 of 7 from 3-point land.

Arizona led early 14-2 and cruised to a 45-25 halftime lead. The Wildcats went through the motions in the second half. Besides Markkanen's effort, Kadeem Allen finished with 18 points, Dusan Ristic was 6 of 9 from the field for 16 points and Kobi Simmons finished with 13 points -- including 3 of 6 three-pointers.

Arizona dished out 25 assists and out rebounded ASU, 38-22. Allen led the way with eight assists as six Wildcats dished out assists.

The Wildcats win their 10th game in a row and improve to 16-2 on the season and 5-0 in the Pac-12 Conference.

ASU's coach Bobby Hurley was quiet tonight. He had just one technical foul.

Way to go, Wildcats!

"I'm done" -- Floyd Lance

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Floyd Lance, 91, the oldest player to ever take the field for the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS), collided with a runner at first base last week and re injured his shoulder.

Lance, who had rotator cuff surgery in 2005, had an X-ray taken of his shoulder just hours after the TOTS' game on Monday. The result of the X-ray shows a significant tear and it looks like Lance's playing days are over.

Tuesday the news wasn't good. Floyd's surgeon said the tear is inoperable. Right now Floyd is dealing with pain and discomfort, but trying his best to stay away from the painkillers.

"I'm done," Lance said this morning, prior to a TOTS' game.

Lance, who turns 92 in September, did leave the door open, though...slightly, saying -- "After some rehab I might be able to play defense, but right now I'm unable to move my right arm more than a few inches...up or down."

Lance, nicknamed "Sir Floyd" for his longevity with the TOTS,  joined the amateur baseball organization in 1999 and has played in 1,208 games, batted 3,403 times, scored 968 runs, collected 1,471 hits and knocked in 598 runs. He maintained a .500-plus batting average through 2013, and recently ended 2016 with a career batting average of .432.

Floyd has been  a standout first baseman all these years with the TOTS. His ability to field tough throws at first base is legendary. At 6-1, he's tall and lanky, and gives the infielders a big target to throw to. Floyd's teammates have grown to expect the unexpected when he's at first base. Lance, year after year, has consistently fielded his position with skill and grace.

Floyd Lance is one of a kind. Fans, opponents of his, his teammates -- all marvel at his ability to play ball competitively into his 90s.

Hats off to you, Floyd.

Team White edges Team Blue, 7-6

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Joe Opocensky and Jesse Ochoa combined for four hits and four RBI to lead Team White to a 7-6 win over Team Blue at Udall Park today in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

Two hard-throwing right-handers, Bob Daliege and Pigpen Price, found themselves in a pitching duel for seven innings. With a 7-4 lead and one out in the top of the seventh, Team Blue scored quickly when lefty Tim Tolson picked up his third hit of the game with a two-run, two-out RBI single to left field for his third and fourth run batted in on the day, but Price worked out of the jam when he forced the next batter Ron Carlson into a ground out to end the game.

For Price, it was his first win of the new year. "Nice to have one win in the books, maybe I should quit now while I'm ahead."

It was not a good day for 91-year-old first baseman Floyd Lance, who was involved in a collision at first base. Dick Ducklow hit a slow roller to third, but the throw to first from Opocensky was in the dirt and Lance collided with the runner. Lance banged up his shoulder and headed off to the emergency room.

Chances are Lance, the oldest active player on the TOTS, will shake it off and be back in action next week.

As for the TOTS, they'll be back in action on Wednesday. Game time 10 a.m.

Houston, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Green Bay move on as expected

NFL Playoffs

It was pretty cut and dried. The home teams survived the wild card games in the NFL playoffs last week with Houston downing the Raiders 27-14, the Seattle Seahawks winning over the Lions 26-6, the Pittsburgh Steelers easing by the Dolphins 30-12 and the Green Bay Packers with an easy win over the New York Giants, 38-13.

Eight teams left to fight it out. The bye teams last week -- New England, Kansas City, Atlanta and Dallas --will now join in on the action this week.

My predictions this week: New England over Houston; Pittsburgh over Kansas City; Atlanta over Seattle and the Dallas Cowboys over Green Bay.

Then again, there maybe an upset brewing. It'll be interesting the rest of the way.

Part-time TOTS are a hit

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

During 2016, 47 different players played for the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS).

Most of the players on the roster play year around, some are winter visitors and play three or four months out of the year, and then there are a few who still work for a living and join their TOTS' teammates during the summer months and over the holidays.

The top part-time TOT is 69-year-old Mike Steele, a member of the TOTS since 2008. Mike is a school teacher and hustles over to Udall Park to play baseball, mostly during the heat of the summer and during all the holiday breaks.

And when he shows up, Mike typically lights up the scoreboard. Take for instance his stats in 2016.

Steele played in just 33 games in 2016, but batted .548 with 51 hits in 93 trips to the plate. He scored 34 runs, collected six doubles and a triple and drove in 23 runs.

Another member of the TOTS who still works for a living is Joe Opocensky. Joe, 66, is a meat cutter, but no matter how you slice it, he makes the most out of his time on the ball field. In 2016, Joe played in 58 games and batted .484 with 90 hits in 184 at bats. A lefty, Opocensky, who joined the TOTS in 2014, drove in 69 runs -- good enough for fifth place among all TOTS' hitters in 2016.

The most games played by a TOT in 2016 was 112. Just think the stats part-timers Steele and Opocensky would end up with, if they were able to play every month.

Way to go, Mike and Joe!

Wildcats improve to 4-0 in Pac-12 Conference

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Arizona led by 20 points early in the second half and had all but put away the Colorado Buffaloes at Mckale Center tonight.

And then the 17-ranked Wildcats went to sleep, allowing Colorado to chip away at the lead and pull within five, at 69-64, with 2:39 left in the game. The Wildcats finally stopped the bleeding as Parker Jackson-Cartwright canned two free throws, Dusan Ristic banked in a field goal and Cartwright followed moments later with a shot inside the key to put the Wildcats up 75-66 and Arizona went on to win the game, 82-73.

Arizona improves to 4-0 in the Pac-12 Conference and 15-2 overall and now own a nine-game winning streak.

It was the Kadeem Allen show tonight. Allen scored 18 points, canned all three of his 3-point attempts, but more importantly, it was his outstanding effort on the defensive side of the ball against Colorado's Derrick White. White averages over 16 points a game, but scored only seven points.

Lauri Markkanen led the Wildcats in scoring with 22 points -- including 4 of 5 from 3-point range, while Dusan Ristic continues his current scoring spree with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Arizona led 39-27 at the half, but the Buffaloes outscored the Wildcats in the second half, 46-43. Colorado out rebounded the Wildcats, 38-32.

Up next: Arizona State on Thursday at McKale.

TOTS' rookies to keep an eye on in 2017

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

A hand full of rookies on the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers are expected to have a "big year" in 2017.

Expected to take over the spotlight in the weekly games at Udall Park are rookies John Mathews, Reed Palmer, Pete Maldonado, David Byars and Tim Boyd (who played in just 15 games during the fall of 2015 and is still considered a rookie).

Palmer, 60,  is the new home run leader on the TOTS and is expected to duel the reigning home run champion Tim Tolson for the top spot as far as power hitters go. Palmer joined the TOTS in 2016 and played in 38 games. He collected 58 hits in just 106 at bats for a healthy .547 batting average. He hit five home runs since his arrival on the scene at Udall Park, one shy of Tolson, who ended up the home run leader for the organization in 2016. Palmer had 57 RBI in 38 games!

Also expected to light up the scoreboard in 2017, is rookie John Mathews, 60, who played in just 26 games in 2016, but batted .506 with 39 hits in 77 trips to the plate -- including two doubles, a triple and a home run.

Add to that, the exploits of Boyd, who played in just 46 games in 2016 and posted a .607 batting average with 91 hits in 150 at bats -- including 17 doubles and 36 RBI.

Also expected to have breakout seasons in 2017 are Maldonado and Byars, two players in their mid-60s, both capable of putting the bat on the ball. Maldonado played in 52 games in 2016 and batted .321, while Byars, the latest addition to the TOTS, is still getting his feet wet, so to speak, and played in just 29 games in 2016, with 18 hits last winter to go along with eight runs scored and four runs-batted-in.

By the end of 2017, the above players will no longer be considered "rookies" with the TOTS.

Welcome aboard, John, Reed and Dave. The trio have a combined total of 93 at bats -- still rookies as far as the TOTS are concerned. As for Pete and Tim, well their rookie status is all but over with a total at bats between the two at 281, heading into 2017.

As 91-year-old Floyd Lance would say, "They're all rookies." Take for instance the young 60-year-old stud Mathews. He'll need to play 31 years with the TOTS to be considered a "real old-timer."

Photos: Reed Palmer (top), John Mathews, Pete Maldonado, Tim Boyd and Dave Byars (bottom).

Baby Bull Barzell led the TOTS in hits with 207 in 2016

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Lloyd "Baby Bull" Barzell led the Tucson Old Timers in hits in 2016 with 207 and Thunder Tim Tolson finished second with 197 hits. Barzell, 66, played in 112 games in 2016, while Tolson, 64,  played in 108 games. Both players lit up the scoreboard in 2016 with Barzell recorded the most at bats  (384), the most runs (164), while Tolson hit the most doubles (46), the most triples (5) and the most home runs with six, one more than rookie Reed Palmer, who finished the year with five.

Nine players finished the year with 100 hits or more. Pistol Pete Peters finished the season with 175 hits, Jesse Ochoa finished fourth in hits with 146, while Ted Davis and Dennis Crowley tied for the fifth spot with 132. Danny "Pigpen" Price finished seventh in hits with 129, Bob Daliege hit safely 124 times for the eighth spot and Brian Reilly finished ninth with 111 hits to cap off all the players who reached the 100-plus hit club for the season.

It was a great season for the TOTS as 47 different players stepped to the plate during 2016.

Floyd Lance, 91, led all the 80-plus players with a .258 batting average. Lance, the oldest active player on the TOTS' roster, played in 91 games, batted 240 times, scored 20 runs, knocked in 27 runs and had 62 hits. He also walked 32 times and knocked in 37 runs. A remarkable achievement, considering Lance plays year around with many players who are 31 years younger than him.

Also worth noting, the second oldest player on the TOTS, 87-year-old Billy Heiny, played in 94 games in 2016. Heiny stepped to the plate 228 times, scored 26 runs and had 24 hits and led the club in walks with 51.

The TOTS' organization is now into its 49th season and will celebrate 50 years in 2018.

Congrats, to all the TOTS players on a job well done!

Thunder Tim Tolson top player in hits, RBI for TOTS in December

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Thunder Tim Tolson led the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) in hits for the month of December with 18 hits in 27 at bats for a .667 average. Tolson played in nine games and led the TOTS in doubles with four and tied for the lead in triples with one, along with John Mathews and Ron Petersen.

Brian Reilly scored the most runs for the month with 10 and drew the most walks with six. Jesse Ochoa was second in hits with 12. Ochoa went 12 for 28 for a .428 batting average. Tim Boyd, who played in just four games, went 9 for 11, a blistering .818 batting average.

Other notable hitters included: Pete Peters and Doc Thompson (both with nine hits), while Pigpen Price, Reed Palmer and Reilly each had eight hits.

Team White edges Team Blue 4-3 in first TOTS' game of 2017

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

After a hand full of rain outs, the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers (TOTS) played their first game of the year today at Udall Park. Team White won the game 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning,  thanks to consecutive singles from Tim Tolson and John Mathews, followed by a throwing error by  Team Blue shortstop Reed Palmer, who fielded a hard hit ball off the bat of Dick Ducklow and threw low to first base. Tolson scampered home from third base with the game-winning run.

Mathews, who reached base in the seventh inning with his third hit of the game, knocked in two runs and scored a run, while Doc Thompson led Team Blue with two hits in two trips to the plate. Thompson pitched the first five innings for Team Blue and struck out five batters. Bob Daliege relieved Thompson in the sixth and was saddled with the loss. Right-hander Pete Maldonado pitched all seven innings for Team White and picked up the win.

The TOTS will be back in action on Monday at Udall Park. Game time 10 a.m.

Arizona slips by stubborn Utes

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Dusan Ristic and Lauri Markkanen combine for 29 points and 17 rebounds to lead 17th-ranked Arizona to a 66-56 win over Utah tonight at the McKale Center.

Arizona lead 35-28 at the half, thanks in part to point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who came off the bench to dish out seven assists as the Wildcats closed the half on a 13-5 run.

Ristic ended up with 18 points, while Markkanen just missed another double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Kadeem Allen chipped in 11 points, while Rawle Alkins scored nine points and hauled down eight rebounds.

Arizona improved to 14-2 and 3-0 in the Pac-12 Conference.

Cardinals' failure to make the playoffs a disappointment

The Arizona Cardinals failed to make the NFL playoffs this year as did my fantasy team.

Disappointing!

As far as my fantasy team goes, I took a hit early with the loss of my top draft pick Adrian Peterson. I did have Larry Fitzgerald as my top receiver this year and he did the best he could with 107 catches and my quarterback was Aaron Rodgers. It was downhill from there.

As for the Cardinals, a lackluster season with only seven wins, eight losses and a tie.

Oh, well. We move on to the playoffs

On paper, it's the New England Patriots (14-2) and the Dallas Cowboys (13-3) with the best regular season records in the NFL. One of those two teams will likely win it all. Once again, the Green Bay Packers (10-6) are in the hunt, along with the Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5) and the Seattle Seahawks (10-5-1). One of those three could muster up enough fight to make the NFL final.

Look for Atlanta (11-5), Detroit (9-7), New York Giants ((11-5), Houston (9-7), Miami (10-6), Oakland (12-4) and Kansas City (12-4) to slip up along the way to the Promised Land -- the NFL Finals.

Just for the record, the highest scoring team in the NFL during the regular season -- Atlanta Falcons with 540 points. The best defense -- New England. The Patriots allowed 250 points in 16 games
Twelve teams are left, all with a shot to reach Houston on Feb. 5, 2017.

It should be fun.

The Dallas Cowboys are holding all the marbles. They keep winning and they'll never have to leave the state of Texas.

It's going to be a fun journey the rest of the way.

Wildcats sweep the Bay Area

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

Fresh off a win against the California Golden Bears Friday night,  the 18th-ranked Arizona Wildcats explode at Palo Alto tonight with a 91-52 win over the Stanford Cardinal.

Five players score in double figures with Rawle Alkins leading the way with 19 points and seven rebounds, while the big men for the Wildcats had an easy time of it under the bucket as Dusan Ristic scores 16 points for the second straight game and Lauri Markkanen nets 15 points. Chance Comanche came off the bench to record a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Kobi Simmons capped off the double-figure scoring with 15 points. A banked-in three-pointer by Kory Jones during garbage time brought a big cheer from the Wildcat bench and the Arizona Wildcat fans who were on hand to witness the game at Maples Pavilion.

Arizona  (13-2, 2-0) sweeps the Bay Area and head home to face the Utah Utes on Thursday night.
