Fifth game of the 1969 World Series
The New York Mets won the fifth game of the 1969 World Series 5-3 over the Baltimore Orioles, thanks to a two-run homer in the sixth inning by Donn Clendenon and a solo shot by Walt Weis in the sixth, but it was a two-run inning in the bottom of the eighth which sealed the win in front of 57, 397 fans at Shea Stadium.
The Mets lost the opener of the series to the Orioles and then won four straight to grab the title.
In the bottom of the eighth, doubles by Cleon Jones and Ron Swoboda put the the Mets up 4-3 and they added an insurance run when Baltimore first baseman John Powell made a fielding error, allowing Jerry Grote to score the final run of the series.
Baltimore's reliever Eddie Watt was saddled with the loss, allowing two hits and two runs in the eighth. Dave McNally pitched seven innings for the Orioles. Jerry Koosman pitched all nine innings for the Mets, allowing five hits and three runs -- a two-run homer by McNally and a solo shot by Frank Robinson.
