TOTS' pitching tandem goes 2-0 for the month
Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)
60-and-over baseball
For the second time this month the pitching tandem of starter Pigpen Price and reliever John Mathews got the job done.
Pitching for Team White, the two hurlers allowed just four runs -- only two earned -- en route to a 8-4 win today over Team Blue. Jesse Ochoa went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs and leadoff batter Roger Beebe went 3 for 4 for Team White, while Lloyd Barzell cranked out three hits for Team Blue.
Team White was helped out by a triple play in the fourth inning as Jerry Smarik hit a one-hopper to third for a unassisted 5, to 4, to 3 for the score book.
Triple plays are rare, even with the 60-and-over TOTS.
"Everything was aligned right with the stars," Mathews said, jokingly. Mathews was on the mound when the triple play occurred and he hurled three more scoreless innings, after the rare defensive play.
The TOTS will be back in action on Friday at Udall: Game time 10 am.
