Remembering TOTS' guest speakers of the past...
Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)
60-and-over baseball
Back in 1999, the Tucson Old Timers ventured away from baseball and selected Arizona football coach Dick Tomey as guest speaker at their annual luncheon.
Tomey, who became the Wildcats' coach in 1987, earned Pac-10 "Coach of the Year" honors in 1992. During his tenure, he coached five NFL first-round draft choices, 20 All-Americans, and 43 first team players. His heralded defenses were labeled the "Desert Swarm".
Tomey resigned after the 2000 season, but his 95 wins are the most in Wildcats history.
Jerry Smarik, who is currently the third oldest active TOT, was the manager of the organization in 1999. Brad Tolson introduced Tomey to the TOTS members and the their families in attendance. The event was held at the Smuggler's Inn. The restaurant is no longer on the corner of Speedway and Wilmot, replaced by luxury apartments.
