Palmer breaks TOTS home run record, again!

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Reed Palmer hit a record-breaking home run at Udall Park today to lead Team White to a  9-1 win over Team Blue in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game. Palmer, who established the club's single season home run record at 21 in 2017, hit a two-run homer to center field in the third inning today -- his 22nd home run of 2018 with still four months left in the TOTS' season.

Palmer's blast today was hit to the deepest part of Udall Park and the ball bounced on top of the fence and rolled another 40 feet. Palmer has hit 43 home runs in 20 months with the TOTS.

The TOTS return to action at Udall on Monday. Game time 9 a.m.

Miguel answers the bell

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Miguel Urtaza, 76, plays right field for the Tucson Old Timers. The hard-hitting left handers on the TOTS have been known to pepper the long ball Miguel's way on a regular basis.

Every now and then Urtaza answers the bell, so to speak, and chases down a towering fly ball, reaches out and makes the play of the day. Today was another one of those days. With lefty Joe Opocensky in the batter's box and another lefty on the mound in the person of Dennis Crowley, the Team White outfielders made the normal shift for lefties and Urtaza made his move to the left, just inches from the right field line.

Opocensky took a hand full of pitches and then hit a towering fly ball to right field. The ball sliced slightly and Urtaza gave chase and at the very last second made a back-handed grab in foul territory for the out.

Teammate Jesse Ochoa said, after the game. "He does that all the time."

Urtaza's comment. "I got lucky."

Playing right field for the TOTS is an experience and quite often the player is assigned to right field and is expected to do the best that he can. In other words, it's not one of the position in which TOTS' players stand in line for.

It's a lonely position. But what can start out as a quiet inning can suddenly turn in to a nightmare for Urtaza and the other players on the club who take their turn at the right field position.

According to TOTS' manager Pete Peters, Miguel, a TOT since 2015, can be a real crowd-pleaser at times. "Miguel is one of our most improved players."

As for Miguel, he no longer worries about being put in right field. "I like it," he says.

And Miguel's teammates? Well, they like it too.

The tough catches are becoming routine for the man who grew up playing baseball in Panuco, Vera Cruz. After all, playing right field tuns out to be the same all over.

Miguel grew up across the border. Yet when he joined the TOTS, he shared with his teammates that he was a true New York Yankee fan. Of course, the Yankees right fielder just happens to be Aaron Judge.

Miguel's favorite saying before each TOTS' game: "Go, Yankees!"

Judge, of course, has his own rooting section at Yankee Stadium and it's called the Judge's Chambers.

If Miguel continues to make more plays of the day,  the TOTS may have to come up with a special name in his honor for the right field corner at Udall Park.

As for today's 60-and-over baseball game at Udall, the game ended up in a 2-2 tie. A defensive gem by both teams. None better of course than the catch in the third inning by Miguel Urtaza.

Pigpen had his day on the field...well...kinda!

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Second baseman Pigpen Price, 73, had a roller coaster ride during the final two innings of the Tucson Old Timers 60-and-over baseball game at Udall Park this morning.

Playing for Team Blue, Price became the third pitcher of the day when he made his way to the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning with his team trailing Team White 6-2. Price walked a couple of batters but a double-play got him out of the inning unscathed and Team Blue came to bat in the top of the sixth needing four runs to extend the game.

Suddenly, Team Blue's bats came alive. For five innings, Team White's righthander Tim Boyd had kept the Team Blue batters at bay. He enjoyed a four-run cushion and needed just three quick outs to seal the win.

But Team Blue put together a six-run rally on six hits -- including the final hit of the inning coming on a RBI-single from 92-year-old Floyd Lance, who completed the rally to give his team a  8-6 lead.

That sent Price back to the mound. Once again he walked two and gave up a hit to load the bases with no outs. The tying run had reached second and the winning run was now on first base. Price returned to second base and hard-throwing Reed Palmer, the fourth pitcher of the day for Team Blue, headed for the mound in hopes of saving the game.

All three runners were the responsibility of  Price. The runner at third quickly scored on a base hit to left and Team Blue's lead shrunk to 8-7 with still no outs.

"I thought I had cost us the game," said Price, who was nervously awaiting the next pitch by Palmer.

Palmer coaxed the next batter into popping up and suddenly the fly ball was heading Price's way. Price made the catch and at the same moment shortstop Tim Tolson had snuck in behind the Team White runner, Rob Morse. Tolson received the ball from Price and tagged second base to double up Morse.

With two outs, the tying run was still at third base and the winning run at first base. That brought up the hard-hitting Mike Dawson. The right man in the batter's box at the right time as far as his Team White teammates were concerned.  Dawson had been a thorn in the side of the Team Blue pitching staff all game long -- first ripping the ball hard off Team Blue's starter Ron Ryan, then reliever Bob Daliege in the fourth, followed by Price in the fifth and Palmer in the sixth.

Dawson quickly found a pitch to his liking from Palmer and hit a shot up the middle. The ball was hit hard, but Price moved to his right, backhanded the ball and stepped on second base for the final out of the game.

"What a roller coaster ride," Price said, after the game. "We came up with a late-game rally to take the lead and then I go back to the mound and almost blow it. Then comes the final play of the game and I get a chance to redeem myself."

Close games are not uncommon as far as the TOTS are concerned. But today's finish was a wild one. An entertaining one to say the least. The game had its ups and downs. Price can attest to that.

The six-run rally in the top of the sixth was full of action with base hits from Palmer, Price, Tolson, Daliege, Ryan and the amazing Floyd Lance. Top defensive plays were made through out the game -- including a nice catch by Team Blue right fielder Denny Leonard. The 80-year-old Leonard camped under a high, towering fly ball off the bat of Team White's hard-hitting lefty Joe Opocensky.

The oldest players on the field today included 89-year-old Billy Heiny, 84-year-old Joe Aparicio and  Lance, who turns 93 in September.

All the TOTS return to action on Wednesday at Udall. Game time: 9 a.m.

And the TOTS will be looking for more roller coaster rides.

Palmer hits 21st homer

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Lefty Reed Palmer blasted his 21st home run of the season and Team White edged Team Blue 11-9 at Udall Park this morning in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game.

Palmer set the club's single-season home run record in 2017 with 21 and now, with four months left in the 2018 season, needs just one more round-tripper to break his own record.

Today, Team White scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 11-8 advantage. Team Blue picked up a run in the top of the sixth, but that was all they could muster as lefty John Mathews picked up the pitching victory, while Team Blue's right-hander Pete Maldonado was saddled with the loss.

The humid weather continues and the TOTS continue their play despite the hot weather with a  9 a.m. game on Friday at Udall and finish off the month of August with three games next week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Team White rally falls short

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Team Blue jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and then held off Team White for the next six innings for a 7-5 win in a 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers game today at Udall Park.

Reed Palmer highlighted a four-run first inning by Team Blue with a three-run homer -- his 20th of the season. Team Blue added three more runs down the stretch, but Team White fought back in every inning and had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Down 7-5 with two outs, Pigpen Price reached on a fielder's choice play and Mike Dawson followed with an opposite-field double, putting runners at second and third. Team White's next batter was the hard-hitting lefty Tim Tolson.

The Team Blue outfielders shifted to the right side of the field, leaving only Ken Nebesny in left-center field. Tolson hit the next outside pitch from Pete Maldonado to left field, but Nebesny camped under the ball at the warning track for the final out of the game.

Mike Dawson pitched well for Team White, but Palmer's first-inning homer was just too much to overcome. Palmer needs one more home run to tie the all-time club record of 21 and just two more homers to establish a new club record. Palmer established the record in 2017. Chances are good the club record will fall soon. It's still August and the TOTS' 2018 season ends on December 31.

Palmer and the TOTS are back in action on Monday at Udall Park. Game time: 9 AM.

60-and-over Tucson Aces

Senior baseball

The 60-and-over Tucson Aces played all seven innings without making an error and right-hander Reed Palmer went the distance in a 6-3 win today at Udall Park over the visiting Old Pueblo Club.

Old Pueblo took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI-single by Bobby Long, but the lead was short lived as the Aces picked up a run in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch and scored another run on a sacrifice fly by John Mathews to take a 4-3 lead.

The Aces added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI-single to center by Dennis Crowley and added another run in the sixth on a single to right field by Tim Tolson.

The Aces turned two doubles plays during the game and Palmer clamped down on the Old Pueblo Club batters in the final two innings.

Jesse Ochoa and John Mathews chipped in three hits apiece for the winners, while Team Blue's Reed Palmer blasted a solo home run, his 19th of the season. Palmer edges closer to the club's home run record of 21, set last year by the hard-hitting lefty.

July a big month at the plate for Mathews, Barzell

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Lloyd Barzell and John Mathews finished 1-2  for the most hits in July on the 60-and-over Tucson Old Timers. Barzell went 19 for 27 and a healthy .704 batting average, while Mathews grabbed 18 hits in 27 at bats for a .667 batting average.

The top man in RBI was Mathews with 13, while Doc Thompson was second in runs-batted-in with 11, and Joe Opocensky was third with 10. One home run was hit in July and the round-tripper was by Thunder Tim Tolson.

Other top hitters for the month included Bob Daliege (14 for 21, a .667 average) and Thompson ( 14 for 25, a .560 average). Barzell scored the most runs during the month with 16.

The top two players in walks were 89-year-old Billy Heiny and 84-year-old Joe Aparicio with five free passes each.

Competitive game ends up in a tie

Tucson Old Timers (TOTS)

60-and-over baseball

Joe Opocensky and Dennis Crowley were locked in a pitching duel for seven innings, but in the end no winner emerged or a loser for that matter. Instead, it was a well-played competitive game at Udall Park this morning in a 60-and-over baseball game as both Team Blue and Team White played to a 6-6 tie.

Team Blue had a great hitting lineup with two young studs in the middle of their order -- 62-year-old Reed Palmer and 62-year-old John Mathews, unleashing their powerful swings. Palmer hit his 18th home run of the season in the first inning and Mathews added a couple of timely hits and was a thorn in the side of Opocensky for most of the game.

Still, Team White found a way to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a two-run inning as Tim Tolson opened the frame with a double to center off Crowley, while Mike Steele and Ted Davis followed with back-to-back singles, allowing Team White to enjoy a short-lived 6-4 lead.

Opocensky and Team White needed to set down Team Blue in the top of the seventh. But things didn't go as planned and with one out and a run in Team White tried to turn a double play to end the game. They got the first out at second, but the relay to first bounced in front of the first baseman Bill Mishler and the tying run scored from third.

In the bottom of the seventh, Team White had the winning run on third base with two out. Davis was at the plate and hit a fastball from Opocensky to right field. The ball was hit too hard and Team Blue's right fielder Steve Beebe grabbed the sizzling one-hopper and was able to nip Davis at first base to end the game.

The game marked the return of two injured TOTS -- Mishler, who is still nursing a rib injury, and Pigpen Price, who returned to action after a five-week bout with bone spur issues in his right foot. Mishler had two hits and was on base three times, while Price went 1 for 4.

"It's nice to be back," Price said, after the game. "I walked off the field without a limp. That's a good thing."

The top plays of the game included Beebe’s play to end the game and a nice running catch in the third inning by Team White's rookie left fielder Mike Griffo. The oldest player on the field today was Team Blue's second baseman Bill Heiny who turned 89 earlier in the week and the youngest player 60-year-old Ron Ryan, who caught for Team White.

The TOTS return to action at Udall on Friday. Game time: 9 a.m.
